FireSafe directors
The Santa Clara County FireSafe Council elected a retired Menlo Park fire chief to its board of directors, according to a press release by the nonprofit organization.
Harold Schapelhouman spent 40 years with the Menlo Park Fire Protection District, serving first as a firefighter and progressing to become chief. The district serves 100,000 residents and businesses in Atherton, East Palo Alto, Menlo Park and unincorporated San Mateo County. Most recently, he served on the advisory board for Ladris Technologies and Komodo Fire Systems, Inc.
As fire chief, Schapelhouman oversaw an annual budget of $60 million. He also managed first response service contracts and agreements with the California Governors Office of Emergency Services and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He also worked with Urban Search and Rescue through California Task Force 3, an “all risk” task force meant to deal with catastrophic collapse, flood and wildland fire and other environmental and manmade incidents that call for immediate search, rescue and recovery operations.
“I have witnessed many tragedies as a firefighter and first responder,” Schapelhouman said in the press release. “I know it’s not a matter of if we will have a significant wildland fire in the county, but rather when. So, I look forward to trying to help mitigate and prevent the catastrophic effects of a potential major wildland fire incident by joining the incredible team at the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council.”
