At first, I thought that people would be sharing their love of compression packing cubes or toiletry organizers, but instead, I was introduced to an entirely new item.

The space-saving item is a vacuum-sealed bag that comes with a portable vacuum pump. In the video, she shows herself taking out three vacuum-sealed bags, which fit into a small carry-on duffel. Inside these bags, she was able to fit three weeks' worth of clothing as well as towels for her trip. Normally, the volume of that many items would take up an entire large suitcase.

RhiRhi goes on to share that the trick to making sure the clothes aren’t wrinkly (since the air gets completely sucked out of the bags) is to fold them nicely when placing them inside the bag. As she demonstrates packing and compressing each bag, you can see very clearly that the bags shrink to about half of their original size.
What About the Weight of the Carry-On Bag?

First and foremost, if you’re taking a flight, it’s important to check the airline’s weight limits on carry-ons. I will say that in my experience, my luggage has only been weighed (domestically and internationally) when I’ve gone to drop off a full-sized suitcase at the luggage drop. When I’ve traveled with just my carry-on, however, I’ve never been asked to weigh the bag. You don’t need to shove a ridiculous amount of clothing into a carry-on, especially if you’re just traveling for a week or two. It’s helpful to have extra room in your bag, however, if you end up buying souvenirs that take up a bit more space. That’s where the vacuum-sealed bags come in handy–you start your trip with extra room in your bag, giving yourself ample space to fill with goodies to bring home.
Vacuum-sealed bags are also a great way to fit an extra pair of shoes into your bag, which is always one of my biggest dilemmas when packing. Now, instead of having to forgo your favorite pair of shoes, you can vacuum-seal your clothes, giving you a bit of extra space for those shoes. With both of these methods, you won’t be left with an extremely heavy carry-on, just one that has a bit of extra room inside!
