Chicago Cubs Lineup: The Standard Group vs Verlander

CUBS LINEUP — I hate the West Coast trips. This game starts far too late for my liking (8:45 pm CT), and it’s the same thing tomorrow. The least the Giants and starter Justin Verlander can do for us is give up a bajillion first-inning runs. It’s only fair.

Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the nightcap in San Francisco.

    Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Michael Busch, 1B Kyle Tucker, RF Seiya Suzuki, DH Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Carson Kelly, C Ian Happ, LF Nico Hoerner, 2B Dansby Swanson, SS Matt Shaw, 3B

No notable changes to the typical Cubs lineup tonight.

    San Francisco Giants Lineup:

Heliot Ramos, LF Rafael Devers, 1B Willy Adames, SS Casey Schmitt, 2B Wilmer Flores, DH Matt Chapman, 3B Luis Matos, RF Patrick Bailey, C Drew Gilbert, CF

    Pitching Matchup:

    Chicago Cubs: Matthew Boyd, LHP

Matthew Boyd has allowed more than three earned runs only three times this season. Unfortunately, two of those were against the Brewers, including his last time out in Chicago: 5.1 IP, 6H, 4ER, 3BB, 3K. It wasn’t a terrible performance, but it certainly wasn’t Boyd at his best.

HOWEVER, I am guessing he has a strong bounce-back outing tonight.

For one, I don’t think there were any bad signs from his last outing to make me nervous about this one. And the last time the Brewers got to him, Boyd came back out for his next start and threw 7.0 scoreless, walkless innings against the Orioles with just four hits and eight strikeouts.

For another, the Giants are the literal worst team in baseball versus left-handed pitching this season (74 wRC+), including a 25.1% strikeout rate … and an even-lower 70 wRC+ in the second half. Likewise, Boyd faced the Giants earlier this season, scoring just two earned runs on five hits and no walks against seven strikeouts in 6.0 IP.

Bottom line, I feel confident in Boyd tonight. Baseball can always baseball, but this has the signals of a favorable matchup for him.

San Francisco Giants: Justin Verlander, RHP

The Cubs saw Max Scherzer a couple of weeks ago, and they’ve got Justin Verlander tonight. There’s no meaningful connection between them, but they’re just two old, future Hall-of-Famers who occupy a similar space in my mind (and I bet yours too), so I mentioned it.

Anyway, Verlander actually still has some impressive peripherals this season, including a 3.88 FIP, and he’s managed contact well enough (37.1 hard%, 8.6 barrel%). But the results are not quite as favorable: 4.64 ERA and only 7 quality starts in 22 tries.

But make no mistake, he does still have the occasional gem in him. Just two games ago, he kept the Rays scoreless over 7.0 innings of work with 8 strikeouts, no walks, and only two hits.

It’s just that he sandwiched that between 12ER in 9.1 IP against the Nationals and Padres.

That’s kind of just how it is with older, former aces. IF they have their feel or their strength last night, their talent and experience can propel them, momentarily, back to greatness. Otherwise, they’ll be flat. You just never know what you’re going to get.

But I’ve seen the Cubs play enough games against the shell of, for one example, Adam Wainwright, to know better than to write those guys off completely. Still, Verlander is beatable and the Cubs offense, when it’s clicking, is among the best in baseball. Hopefully, they bring it tonight.

Note: Verlander has been particularly susceptible this season to left-handers, who are hitting .276/.351/.433 (.342 wOBA).
