Ian Wheeler is the odd-man out in the Chicago Bears running backs room.
The Bears announced they have put eight players on waivers, released three others, and placed another on the non-football in this latest round of transactions ahead of the 3 p.m. CT Tuesday deadline to trim rosters to 53 players. And the most notable name of the bunch might be Ian Wheeler.
The second-year running back was a fan favorite as a rookie in 2024, thanks in part to what was shown on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” last summer. And when his first season as a pro ended before it could truly get started because of a season-ending injury in the preseason, it endeared the Howard University product more to this fan base. But even after scoring two touchdowns in Chicago’s Preseason Week 2 win against the Buffalo Bills, Wheeler still finds himself on the waiver wire.

While Ian Wheeler was the name that opened my eyes, he wasn’t the only player the Bears parted ways with on Monday.
PLAYERS PLACED ON WAIVERS:
Defensive back Millard Bradford Defensive lineman Xavier Carlton Defensive back Alex Cook Linebacker Power Echols Defensive back Kaleb Hayes Quarterback Austin Reed Tight end Joel WilsonPLAYERS WHO HAVE BEEN RELEASED
Cornerback Tre Flowers Running back Royce Freeman Offensive lineman Joshua MilesWhat stands out most about this batch of Bears cuts is that both running backs who appeared to be angling for one roster spot during the team’s preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs are out of the picture. Perhaps the departures of Ian Wheeler and Royce Freeman mean that Kyle Monangai, Roschon Johnson, and Travis Homer are closer to getting back to full health than we might have otherwise expected. Or maybe it is a tell that there are other running backs on the market who intrigue the team more than the current options.
The Tre Flowers cut doesn’t surprise me. Moreover, it makes me feel better about the health situations regarding cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon. After watching Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes carve up Chicago’s secondary in Preseason Week 3, Bears fans shouldn’t take their starting cornerbacks for granted.
One last note: Placing cornerback Zah Frazier on the non-football injury list is noteworthy. A fifth-round pick out of UTSA, Frazier missed training camp because of a personal matter. It was tough to envision him making the initial 53-man roster when you consider how far behind he is compared to his teammates. But his size, speed, and ball skills make him an ingtriguing player to watch.
More to come later…
