Cubs Prospects Report .. August 25, 2025: Ballesteros Homers, Wiggins Returns, More

The Iowa Cubs wrapped up the week with a loss to Sugar Land, but a few top prospects had good days at the plate. Knoxville was swept away in their doubleheader with Montgomery, but Jaxon Wiggins was back on the mound. Plus, South Bend and Myrtle Beach both picked up wins to end their series. Let’s get to it.

Cubs Prospects Report | August 25, 2025

Triple-A Iowa Cubs

A tough outing on the mound from Will Sanders put the Cubs in a hole early that they couldn’t really dig out of. Sugar Land put up three runs in the first inning, added one more in the second, and two more in the fourth. Iowa scored in the third inning on a Nicky Lopez sacrifice fly. Iowa trailed 7-1 in the seventh inning when Moises Ballesteros blasted a two-run homer to make it 7-3. In the ninth, James Triantos made it 8-4 on an RBI single, but that was as close as Iowa would get.

    Notable Performances

    Moises Ballesteros | 2-3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB Kevin Alcántara | 2-5, 2B James Triantos | 1-5, RBI

FINAL: Space Cowboys 8, Cubs 4 | Box Score

    Double-A Knoxville Smokies

The bad news for the Smokies is that they dropped both games in their doubleheader against the Biscuits. The good news is, Jaxon Wiggins was back on the mound for the first time since July 19 and looked pretty good! The organization has been managing his workload this season following a 2023 Tommy John surgery. Wiggins went three hitless and scoreless innings with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Smokies held a 2-1 lead heading into the sixth, but the wheels came off with Grant Kipp on the mound, who allowed five runs on three hits and three walks in three innings of work. Knoxville got on the board in the fifth with a two-run Carter Trice home run. Then, trailing 5-2 in the seventh, got a sacrifice fly from Brett Bateman and an RBI single from Pedro Ramirez, but they came up just short of the comeback and fell 5-4.

In game two, Montgomery took a 2-0 lead after three innings. Erian Rodriguez started for the Smokies and was fine, allowing just those two runs over five innings of work. The Smokies got on the board with a sac fly in the seventh from Pedro Ramirez, but that was all they’d get in the second matchup, dropping the game 3-1.

    Notable Performances (Gm. 1)

    Jaxon Wiggins | 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K, 2 BB Carter Trice | 1-2, HR, 2 RBI, BB Jordan Nwogu | 1-2, 2 R, BB

    Notable Performances (Gm. 2)

    Corey Joyce | 2-3 Brett Bateman: 1-2, R, 2B, BB Erian Rodriguez | 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 2 BB

    High-A South Bend Cubs

South Bend had only five hits on the day, but they sure made them count! Three of those hits came in the third inning. Rafael Morel led it off with a double, then Kade Snell singled to move him to third. When Snell tried stealing second, Morel was able to take home, getting South Bend on the board. Following that, Edgar Alvarez went deep to make it 2-0.

Things were quiet until the sixth when Alvarez picked up his second hit of the day, starting the inning off with a single. Cam Sisneros came up next, and he belted a two-run homer to make it 4-1. The Cubs allowed one more run in the ninth, but held on for a 4-2 win.

On the mound, Yenrri Rojas was very good again. He tossed seven innings of one-run ball, gave up four hits, and struck out six Kernels.

    Notable Performances

    Edgar Alvarez | 2-4, HR, 2 R Cam Sisneros | 1-3, HR, 2 RBI, BB Yenrri Rojas | 7.0 IP, 4 H, R, 6 K, BB

FINAL: Cubs 4, Kernels 2 | Box Score

    Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans

After a few lower-scoring affairs, we got a track meet in the final between the Pelicans and RiverDogs. Myrtle Beach won a high-scoring, back-and-forth matchup that saw each of their top four hitters in the lineup pick up three hits on the day. Kane Kepley stood out yet again, going 3-5 with three runs, two RBI, and two stolen bases.

Charleston took a 9-8 lead into the ninth, but a Justin Stransky RBI single sent the game into extras. After the River Dogs jumped back in front in the 10th, Ty Southisene tied it back up with an RBI triple. In the 11th, Charleston took a 12-10 lead with a pair of runs, but Myrtle Beach fought back. Stransky cut it to a one-run deficit with a sac fly, then Kepley tied it with a clutch RBI single. Following that, a wild pitch scored Yahil Melendez, and Myrtle Beach walked it off.

    Notable Performances

    Kane Kepley | 3-5, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SB Matt Halbach | 3-4, R, 3 RBI, 2B, 2 BB Ty Southisene | 3-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3B, 2 BB, SB

    FINAL/11: Pelicans 13, RiverDogs 12 | Box Score
