Before the world knew her as global pop superstar Lady Gaga, she was Stefani Germanotta, just another girl in New York City, struggling to make it in the music business.
And though she’s accomplished all that she’s set out to do, NYC has a way of reminding Gaga of where she’s come from, of who she is, and all she's gone through to get where she is today. So, when her Mayhem Ball tour rolled into Madison Square Garden on Aug. 22, Gaga’s emotions were high.
Thankfully, she has a few people in her corner—specifically, a dear friend and her fiancé, Michael Polansky, who both gave Gaga some much-needed advice before the NYC show.
“My artistry was born in this town. I lived here my entire life before I went off to pursue my dreams. But my dreams started here,” said Gaga, 39. “I think about walking on the concrete, going all around the city and just — I remember fighting really hard, fighting really hard for my dreams and what I believed in and for myself.”

“I was with my friend China before the show,” added Gaga, referring to a dear friend and dancer on the tour, “and I said to her, ‘I think I might just fight my way through this whole show, ‘cause when I’m in New York, I fight. I gotta earn it, and I gotta go for it.”
Gaga’s friend offered a different take, telling her that “Sometimes you don’t have to fight, you just have to show up.” Such words clearly had a profound effect on the “Abracadabra” singer.
Gaga’s fiancé had similar advice. “Right before I came onstage, my fiancé, Michael, said, ‘When you go out there, let them fill you up,’” said Gaga. “I knew he was right. I knew that he was.”

Who Is Lady Gaga Going To Marry?
Fans got their first glimpse of Gaga and Michael Polansky’s romance at a New Year’s Eve party in 2020. Gaga and the now 41-year-old tech entrepreneur rang in 2020 with a kiss. They went public with their romance the following February and spent the COVID-19 pandemic together.
Since then, Gaga and Polansky have kept their relationship relatively private. In April 2024, the paparazzi spotted Gaga sporting a large diamond ring on her engagement finger. A few months later, while attending the Paris Olympics, Gaga referred to Michael as her “fiancé.”
When appearing on The Gram Norton Show, she’d confirm the engagement and reveal Polansky proposed on April Fools’ Day.
