Alabama club hockey prepares for Outdoor Classic against NC State

The Alabama club hockey team will face North Carolina State University’s club team in the “Outdoor Classic” Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. CT at Truist Park in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Will Zeek, general manager and assistant coach for Alabama’s hockey club, said that the players were “stoked.”

“The kind of buzz around it was something else that we’ve never had the opportunity to have,” Zeek said. This opportunity stems from the Crimson Tide joining the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League, allowing the team to play in big games like this.

Zeek said playing an outdoor game will bring a lot of the guys “back to the roots of hockey,” since many players from Canada and the northern states grew up playing hockey on an outdoor rink.

“It’s where you refine your skills. It’s where you just go have fun with your friends, and then you take that to a game setting,” Zeek said. “It’s just kind of a full picture for any hockey player. It’s a tradition like none other, and it’s just something special about it that adds an elevation to the game.”

Alabama will take on NC State four times in a 10-day stretch, Nov. 6-15. The first two games will be in Birmingham on Nov. 6 and 7. NC State will also tailgate with Alabama for the LSU football game that Saturday, Nov. 8.

The Crimson Tide will then head to North Carolina the following weekend, Nov. 14 and 15, to take on NC State again for the Outdoor Classic.

Some players to watch from the Crimson Tide are defender Parks Wallace, forward Baz Schuehle, and forward Tyler Zent. Even though this might be the biggest game of the year for Alabama club hockey, the team is treating it like any other game, following the motto of “live in vision, not in circumstances.”

The Outdoor Classic will play an “extremely important” role in helping grow hockey at the collegiate level across the country, Zeek said.

“The eyes that we can have on an event like this show that there is a base for it,” Zeek said. “I mean, as a club level, we’re bringing in money, we’re bringing in revenue, we’re able to do an event like this. It shows that there is growth for it to the level of hopefully one day accepting it as an NCAA sport.”

The game will be live on ESPN+.
