Actress Alexis Arquette publicly transitioned in 2006 during a time when trans visibility was not nearly as commonplace as it is in 2025. Her documentary Alexis Arquette: She's My Brother showed, in raw and emotional detail, what that transition was like and how it impacted her very famous family. Alexis tragically died roughly ten years after she transitioned, at the young age of 47, devastating her siblings and fans.
Recently, on the Lovett or Leave It podcast with host Jon Lovett, Severance actress and Alexis' sister Patricia Arquette opened up about what it was like to have a sibling transition, and her words truly touched many.
Lovett asked Patricia what it was like having to learn to understand and accept the transition Alexis went through, and Patricia did not hold back.

♬ original sound - Crookedmedia"I mean, here's the thing people don't talk about—the family goes through a transition," she admitted. "You know, you do have a period, and maybe not anymore because the world has changed, but you have a period where it's like, wait a minute, I don't want to say goodbye to my brother. I love that person."
She also admitted that she asked Alexis if she loved that person and if she was only doing this because she didn’t openly love who she was.
"So then I remember my sister saying, 'No, you're not losing your brother. You know, she's like a butterfly,'" Patricia recalled. "And then by then we'd had a lot of our deaths, our parents. So it was like, I don't care. I trust you. You tell me who you are. You tell me what you feel inside. I believe you. I don't want to lose anybody else in my life that I love or judge them or push them away or not embrace them. I don't understand what it feels like to be trans, but I trust you."
There were many touching responses in the comments, both relating to her family’s situation as well as simply acknowledging the love and empathy it took for her to come to that conclusion.
"What a perfect answer. ‘Tell me who you are & I’ll believe you,'" praised one fan.
"I had to mourn my daughter Bri while getting to know and loving my new son Ash. Yes, mourning is a sad thing, but it's not a bad thing," said one parent of a trans child.
"This is how good people live," another simply stated.
"WOW! Best explanation I've heard of what acceptance looks like, and how it actually helps the person doing the accepting to gain something in the process," noted another.
How Did Alexis Arquette's Siblings Handle Her Death?
In the wake of her death, her siblings Patricia, David Arquette, Rosanna Arquette, and Richmond Arquette rallied around her and her memory. As she died, they reportedly serenaded her with David Bowie's "Starman," though no cause of death was revealed. They released several statements, according to Jacksonville.com, on both her passing and her extraordinary life.
"Alexis was a brilliant artist and painter, a singer, an entertainer, and an actor," her brothers and sisters said. "We learned what real bravery is through watching her journey of living as a trans woman. We came to discover the one truth—that love is everything."
The Arquette family went on to say that their sister’s career "was cut short, not by her passing, but by her decision to live her truth and her life as a transgender woman."
"Despite the fact that there are few parts for trans actors, she refused to play roles that were demeaning or stereotypical," they said. "She was a vanguard in the fight for understanding and acceptance for all trans people."
The love and acceptance they showed her while she was alive clearly still lives on today.
