It's the story that keeps on giving.
After no winner emerged in Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot drawing, the grand prize rolled over to an estimated $700 million for Saturday, August 23. The lucky winner can opt for a one-time cash payout of roughly $316.3 million.
It’s already been a record-setting year. In 2025 alone, four jackpot tickets have been sold: a $328.5 million win in Oregon, a $527 million prize in California, a $167.3 million jackpot in Kentucky, and the most recent — a $204.5 million win in California in May.
But with all this talk of lottery winners, one story from 2019 is reemerging on social media in recent days: the story of Mike Weirsky and Eileen Murray.
In 2019, just five months after finalizing his divorce, Weirsky hit the Mega Millions jackpot for $273 million.
Weirsky and his ex-wife, Murray, had been married for 15 years. During that time, Murray was the breadwinner. Weirsky struggled to hold steady employment, while Murray supported their household. When the marriage ended, a court ordered Murray to pay spousal support for five years.
Neither she nor the judge who set the terms could have imagined that her ex-husband would become a multimillionaire practically overnight.
Speaking to Inside Edition at the time, Murray didn’t hide her frustration at the irony.
“To him, [the alimony] is pocket change at this point,” she said. “Think about the amount of money that he has just won. What I’m paying him is a pittance.”
Still, she insisted she wasn’t chasing his winnings: “I don’t want anyone to misconstrue that I’m coming after him,” she said. “I hope he does very good things with it… I’m happy for him, I really am. I’m not an angry person, I’m not a mean person.”
Murray even laughed about the coincidence that Weirsky purchased his ticket at a QuickChek convenience store that held personal meaning for them.
“He proposed to me at that QuickChek,” she recalled. “I’m his good luck charm.”
For his part, Weirsky was blunt when asked about Murray in his own interview with the outlet: “It’s over with,” he said. “I just want her to stop being in my life.”
If there's anything to learn, maybe it's the fact that one ticket could buy a dream vacation, a new house — or in some cases, a story that keeps people talking years later.
