Drone attack sparks fire at Russian nuclear plant

A Ukrainian drone attack caused damage to a nuclear power plant and fuel export terminal in Russia overnight, officials have said.

Drones hit the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, close to the Ukrainian border, as well as the terminal in Ust-Luga, located further north.

The press service at the plant claimed the attacks had damaged an auxiliary transformer and reduced operating capacity at one of the units by 50 per cent.

There were no injuries, and radiation levels around the plant remain normal, the press service added.

Alexander Drozendo, governor of Russia’s Leningrad region where the Ust-Luga port is located, said ten Ukrainian drones had been shot down over the port and that debris had sparked the fire at the fuel export terminal.

He confirmed that there were no injuries reported, adding: “Firefighters and emergency services are currently working to extinguish the blaze.”

The Russian Defence Ministry said 95 Ukrainian drones were destroyed last night. They claimed that Ukraine had targeted 13 different regions, including Crimea, Leningrad, and Samar.

The aviation authority said flights had to be paused at several airports in Russia as a result of the strikes.

Ukraine has not yet provided comment on the attacks but have previously said attacks on Russia are aimed at destroying infrastructure used by Moscow in its military efforts.

The strikes on Russian territory come several days after Ukrainian officials announced they had experienced one of their heaviest bombardments.

Earlier this week, Ukraine’s air force said that 614 drones and other missiles had been launched by Russia in the biggest air attack since July.

One person was killed by the strikes in Lviv, whilst 15 others were reportedly injured in the south-western Transcarpathia region when missiles hit a US electronics firm.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly signaled his support to meet Vladmir Putin “in any format” in an attempt to negotiate a peace deal, although he has been wary about suggestions that a meeting could take place in Budapest.

The Ukrainian leader labelled attacks ahead of his meeting with President Trump in the White House on Monday as “a demonstrative and cynical Russian strike” which showed the necessity for strong security guarantees in any deal.

Front lines of the war have not shifted in recent months, but Russia have increased their territorial attacks, especially since diplomatic talks began.

“That is why Russia should not be rewarded for its participation in this war. The war must be ended”, Zelensky wrote on social media.

Putin has been resistant to firming up a ceasefire deal, sparking backlash from Trump who has suggested he would support Ukraine using missiles to hit back at Russia.

Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Thursday : “It is very hard, if not impossible, to win a war without attacking an invaders country. It’s like a great team in sports that has a fantastic defense, but is not allowed to play offense”.

Ukraine is now set to mass produce a new cruise missile which could strike targets deep in Russian territory, including arms depots, oil refineries and other critical infrastructure.

Officials have further reiterated the need for support from allies to defend their territory from future attacks.
