Barbara Eden, 94, Gets Candid About Silly I Dream of Jeannie Scandal

Actress Barbara Eden is getting candid about NBC’s Standards and Practices Department's decision to not allow her belly button to be visible while playing the lovable genie, Jeannie, on the sitcom, I Dream of Jeannie.

While speaking to Remind Magazine for an August 2025 interview, Eden, who starred on I Dream of Jeannie during its five seasons from 1965 to 1970, said she didn't find the controversy all that serious. She referenced that she had to wear high-waisted pants in order to cover her navel, as it would have been deemed inappropriate otherwise.

“I’ve often said that women in the film are often known for their beautiful eyes or their other body parts, but I ended up with the belly button … In this day and age, you would not believe that," said Eden to the publication. "But at the time, even I was giggling about it because it was silly. Not only did I have pants on that were like a bathing suit pant, I had everything covered except my arms.”

During the Remind Magazine interview, Eden also spoke about Jeannie's iconic red and pink costume, which included a crop top, a shrug, and flowy pants. She said fashion designer Joie Hutchinson, whom she described as "wonderful," designed the look.

"She came to me, and we had a fitting before she even designed it. She asked what my favorite color was, and I told her I didn’t really have a favorite color, but pink, I liked that," said Eden during the interview. "And she took notes and measured me and looked at my body to see what she wanted. And then came back with sketches and they were just great. The costume itself was all I could ever wish for.”

Eden discussed her role as Jeannie during an April 2024 interview with ABC7. She shared how the show came up with Jeannie's way to conjure her magic. As fans are aware, the character would fold her arms and blink.

"Our first director was Gene Nelson, who was also a dancer and choreographer. So that was his idea to do that. And it didn't take any time at all," said the 94-year-old actress.
