Fans of Dexter: Original Sinwill have to say goodbye sooner than expected. Although a second season renewal was announced back in April, sources tell Variety that Paramount has quietly decided not to move forward with the series after all.
Despite the early announcement, no production schedule was ever set, and development on the follow-up season never got off the ground. The show debuted in December 2024 and wrapped its first, and now final, season in February 2025.
The decision not to continue comes on the heels of the Skydance-Paramount merger, which ushered in a major reshuffling of leadership and content priorities.
Matt Thunell, who now oversees Showtime’s production operations, is reportedly spearheading an evaluation of the entire programming slate. According to the media outlet, Thunell and his team chose to refocus efforts on established hits, most notably the Dexter franchise.
And the shift is already taking shape.
Paramount is said to be opening a writers room for a potential second season of Dexter: Resurrection, the latest chapter in the long-running Dexter saga. Michael C. Hallreturns once again as Dexter Morgan in the series, which follows both Dexter and Dexter: New Blood.
While a Season 2 order hasn’t been locked in yet, signs are positive. The premiere, which dropped on July 11, drew 4.4 million multiplatform viewers within its first week. Critical response has also been strong — the first season holds a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The season finale is set to air September 5.
Paramount’s renewed focus on Dexter signals a larger strategy shift; leaning into well-established, fan-favorite franchises as the streaming landscape becomes more competitive.
News of Original Sin’s untimely demise comes as Showtime’s gradual decline has continued steady for years. Once a champion of premium scripted content on par with HBO, the network’s current slate has been slimmed down to just a handful of scripted originals and a rebrand as Paramount+ with Showtime.
The current Showtime lineup includes The Chi, The Agency and Yellowjackets along with Dexter: Resurrection.
Original Sin featured a strong ensemble cast including Hall, alongside Patrick Gibson, Molly Brown, Christina Milian, Christian Slater, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson and guest stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey.
Still, despite its talent roster, the series didn’t move the needle enough to survive the network’s tighter programming priorities.
