We left last week’s game feeling pretty darn good, but this week, not so much! It’s a long season; there will be highs and lows. Let’s do some grades for tonight’s game.
Bears Offense
QB Caleb Williams | D+
For as comfortable as Caleb looked last week against Buffalo, that’s about as uncomfortable as he looked on the first two drives. He made a few nice completions, but he took a bad sack that was on him, botched a handoff with Olamide Zaccheaus on the first drive, and just didn’t seem nearly as in control as he was last week.
On the third drive, he looked a little bit more comfortable, processed his reads a little faster, and seemed to be more in control of the offense. After taking the offense down the field, he was pressured on 2nd & 5, which forced a throw away, and missed an open enough Rome Odunze in the endzone for a touchdown.
The offense got the ball back with just over two minutes left in the half, so Ben Johnson let the starters run a two minute drill. Granted, it was against the Chiefs backups, but this drive went better. Caleb looked comfortable in the pocket, found Rome Odunze for a big play into the redzone, then found him a play later for a touchdown.
This season is going to have some highs and some lows with Caleb Williams and the new offense. Let’s just trust the process and let it all play out.
RB D’Andre Swift | B
Swift led the Bears in touches by far, and I thought he looked pretty decent in doing so. He picked up a few first downs, hurdled a defender, and ran hard in the process. Not a bad appearance for Swift after not playing last week, and one that was nice to see, granted the Bears’ uncertainty at the running back position.

Moore had a catch, and he made a nice block downfield on a D’Andre Swift first-down run.
WR Rome Odunze | B-
He made one catch and got open enough in the endzone on a third down in the redzone, but he and Caleb couldn’t hook up thanks to a throw that seemed a little high.
In the two minute drill after not being able to reel in a ball down the sideline, Odunze made back-to-back catches, one got the Bears deep into the redzone, and the next went for a TD.
WR Olamide Zaccheaus | B-
Zaccheaus and Caleb Williams flubbed a handoff on a jet sweep on the first drive, but other than that he looked good again. He made a few grabs, picked up yards after the catch, and looked very much like a reliable target for this offense going forward.
TE Colston Loveland | C
He made a catch and was part of the offensive line that blocked well.
Offensive Line | B
They were…solid. D’Andre Swift had some holes to run through, Caleb Williams had a decent amount of time in the pocket, and they picked up a couple of tough first downs on third and one. Braxton Jones did get beaten badly again inside on a missed blitz pickup. Getting beat inside is starting to become a trend for him this preseason, and it’s not one that’s going to jive well with Ben Johnson.
Luke Newman started at left guard in place of Joe Thuney and was solid again. Don’t worry, Thuney isn’t hurt; he was just given the game off. Newman has clearly impressed in camp and is going to play some meaningful minutes at some point this season. He seems like a steal as a sixth-rounder.
Defense: D
Now, the Bears’ defense did go up against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ starters on offense, but they didn’t look very good in the process. The pass rush was nonexistent, and Mahomes had all day to throw. Nashon Wright got beat on a deep ball and committed a pass interference. KC scored a touchdown on the first drive, and would have scored another on the second if it weren’t for a brutal drop in the end zone.
