High-A South Bend Cubs
Apologies, thanks to some of you in the comments, I realized I’d been referring to the Kernels as “Quad Cities” instead of “Cedar Rapids.” Hadn’t done that in the past with this matchup, but hand up, that brain fart is on me.
As for the game, Christian Hernandez came up big for South Bend a couple of times in the win. After the Kernels took a 2-0 lead after two, Hernandez hit a one-out RBI single to get his squad on the board. In the fifth, after Drew Bowser tied the game up at two, Hernandez dropped in another RBI single to give the Cubs a 3-2 lead. After stealing second base, Hernandez stole third as well, and then took home thanks to a wild pitch, making it a 4-2 lead.
South Bend would add another run in the seventh on yet another wild pitch, and one more in the eighth on a Miguel Pabon RBI single, giving them a 6-2 win.
Notable Performances

The Pelicans got on the board first in the second via a Jairo Diaz sacrifice fly, then added another in the fourth on a Matt Halbach groundout. In the fifth, Angel Cepeda drove in a run with an RBI single, then when he tried stealing second base later in the inning, Kane Kepley took home on a heads-up play.
Myrtle added three more in the sixth on a Derik Alcantara sac fly, a Kane Kepley single, and another single from Cepeda. On the mound, Dawson Netz, Joel Sierra, and Pierce Coppola combined for the shutout and allowed just three hits along the way.
