Season 49 of Survivor has yet to begin airing, but one contestant already overcame a major ordeal that rivals the reality show’s challenges.
When asked in his pregame press why he thinks he’ll become the next winner of Survivor, Jeremiah Ing had an interesting answer.
“I’m going to win Survivor 49 because the day that I was flying out, I got hit by a car,” he told Entertainment Weekly in an article published on Friday, August 22. “And I asked the universe to give me a sign, and Venus [Vafa] from season 46 walked right past me.”

Amid the scary incident and his run-in with Vafa, Ing, 39, somehow kept his wits about him.
“I didn’t say anything because of my NDA and I wanted to say so much to her, and she looked at me with her beautiful brown eyes and I’m like, ‘I’m going to message you one day, but give me a little bit of time,’” he recalled.

Vafa, 26, was notably eliminated on day 21 of Survivor’s 46th season, which aired in early 2024. (Kenzie Petty ultimately won the competition.)
As for Ing, the global events manager from Toronto is one of 18 contestants appearing on season 49 of the series, with the premiere scheduled for September 24.
While Ing went on to compete on Survivor’s 49th season after being hit by a car, multiple alternates were flown to Fiji if they were needed. As it turns out, two contestants were sent home before filming began for breaking the show’s rules, so Jason Truel and Michelle “MC” Chukwujekwu replaced them.
Longtime host Jeff Probst explained the cast switch-up in an exclusive Parade interview published on Thursday, August 21.
“We take this game very seriously,” Probst, 63, said. “We want you to have a blast when you play. But we do have rules, and they have to be respected, and if they’re not, we will take action. And we did, and I’m sure it will send a seismic warning to future players, and I’m okay with that, because we don’t ask for a lot. We let you play your own game on your own terms. We never tell you what to say. We never do anything. We don’t even nudge players. It is your world. All we ask is you’ve got to respect our rules. We only have a few. But if you don’t, then basically what you’re telling us is, ‘I’m not a team player,' and that’s just never going to work for us.”
Season 49 of Survivor premieres on CBS Wednesday, September 24, at 8 p.m. ET.
