Austin Butler Reveals Frightening Health Scare

Austin Butler admits that he's pushed himself to his physical limits as an actor, opening up about a frightening health scare that should have made him slow down, but didn't.

The Caught Stealing star shared details of the crisis in a new interview with Men's Health. He initially wrote off his symptoms at first, but realized this incident may have been his body trying to tell him to slow down.

On a flight to the movie set for The Bikeriders, Butler was suddenly jolted by an intense migraine. He shared the fright over a health scare where he suddenly lost his vision.

“It felt like the life was being sucked from my body," he admitted. I suddenly felt a euphoric sensation, and I actually thought I was dying."

Instead of heading to a doctor to investigate his symptoms, the actor headed to The Bikeriders set and worked an entire day. He wrote off the incident as being sleep-deprived.

Additionally, Butler spent eight months dealing with intense foot pain. The issue began in South Korea during the press tour for Dune: Part Two. It continued until he saw a New York City doctor, who eventually found a piece of glass embedded in his foot.

Butler has a history of pushing himself to his limits as an actor. One day after filming was completed on Baz Luhrmann's Elvis, the actor admitted himself to a hospital.

In an interview with PEOPLE Magazine, Butler revealed he was hospitalized and bedridden for a week with a virus that simulates appendicitis. "I had a week of downtime, where I actually ended up in the hospital," he explained.

"I didn't get sick the entire time I filmed [Elvis]. But the day I finished, I ended up in the emergency room."

He told British GQ in 2022 that giving himself over to filming the biopic came with consequences. “My body just started shutting down the day after I finished Elvis.”

“For a long time, I felt that it had to be a tortured process. I would come out the other side broken,” the actor told Men's Health of internalizing his roles.

“Rather than just putting parts of yourself away and trying to pretend that they don’t exist, it’s like going into the gross bits of yourself—going into the bits that you don’t want to look at—and finding a way of integrating that into the whole.”

Butler's intense approach to method acting has served him well professionally. However, he has now found ways to approach his work rather than suppressing his own identity.

Austin Butler's next role is as a former baseball player who gets pulled into a crime in Caught Stealing. The film's release date is August 29, 2025.
