Shannon Sharpe responds to Eric Dickerson’s wild Shedeur Sanders conspiracy that the NFL told teams not to draft rookie

The Shedeur Sanders draft still saga isn’t over.

Former NFL running back and Pro Football Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson reignited the debate over Sanders’ stunning slide in April’s draft after claiming “via a very good source” why the rookie was the 144th pick.

For much of the months leading into the 2025 NFL draft, Sanders was considered a potential No.1 pick and a nailed-on first rounder.

His competition for the top spot was mainly now Tennessee Titans’ quarterback Cam Ward.

While Ward was eventually selected with the first pick, Sanders’ draft reality stunned the entire football world.

Following his unprecedented slide and subsequent selection by the Cleveland Browns at No.144, Dickerson has suggested Sanders’ slide was a coordinated effort by the NFL and its teams.

“I tell you this much, what I heard from someone that’s in the NFL that the NFL told [teams] don’t draft him, do not draft him,” Dickerson said.

“We’re going to make an example out of him. And this came from a very good source, a very good source.”

Dickerson also added that Sanders had fallen much further than expected, and the Browns were eventually forced to take Sanders.

“He said that – I won’t say who – somebody called the Cleveland Browns and said ‘don’t do that, draft him,’” Dickerson said.

“Because they weren’t going to draft him either… They were forced into drafting him because somebody made a call to them.”

    Shannon Sharpe on Dickerson’s theory

NFL legend and frequent Sanders defender, Shannon Sharpe, discussed Dickerson’s theory on his podcast, Nightcap.

“I didn’t hear this about Shedeur,” Sharpe began.

“If this is true, this would be so sad.

“But this is not out of the realm of possibility.”

Sharpe and co-host Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson went on to suggest that Dickerson’s theory could certainly be true.

“Then there are people that are oblivious that purposely turned the blind eye, ‘Oh, why would the owners collude, why would they care?'” Ochocinco said.

“Ya’ll pick and choose when to use logic and have common sense.”

Sharpe echoed Ochocinco’s sentiment by saying, “You can’t be that naive.”

While Sharpe and Ochocinco refused to dismiss Dickerson’s theory, NFL insider Albert Preer claimed that the idea of collusion is just a conspiracy.

“I don’t think there was any conspiracy here,” Breer said on The Dan Patrick Show.

“I think it’s relatively simple what happened. I think the great majority of NFL teams did not view him as a first-round prospect contrary to what had been out there for the year previous.

“And then I think what happens is once you get past the first round, you look at the history over the years, not a lot of quarterbacks go in the second or third rounds…”

For Sanders, April’s draft will feel like years ago.

He is currently competing locked in an intense quarterback battle between teammates, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Tyler Huntley.

Sanders impressed on his preseason debut against the Carolina Panthers.

He completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the 30-10 win.

However, an oblique injury kept him out of the Browns’ second preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, and in the time since veteran Flacco has been named the Week 1 signal caller against the Cincinnati Bengals.

With that said, head coach Kevin Stefanski has confirmed that Sanders will play in the Browns’ preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams.
