Jack White Responds to White House Criticism in Bold Political Statement

While the White House might have used the classic White Stripes hit "Seven Nation Army" in a campaign video last year — resulting in a since-dropped lawsuit from the band — the current administration wasn't a big fan of Jack White's recent take on the new Oval Office decor, and now the rock star is clapping back.

This latest feud between the rock star and the White House started when White, 50, took to Instagram this week to criticize the recent Oval Office renovation as "vulgar, gold leafed and gaudy," comparing it to a "professional wrestler's dressing room." In response, on Aug. 20, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung slammed White as a "washed-up, has-been loser" who's "masquerading as a real artist, because he fails to appreciate, and quite frankly disrespects, the splendor and significance of the Oval Office inside of ‘The People’s House,'" in a statement to The Daily Beast.

White wasted no time in responding, posting a lengthy post on Instagram that very same day accusing Donald Trump of "masquerading as a human being."

In his post, which also featured a variety of photos including a pic of Trump holding his golden “Never Surrender” sneakers and posing with other types of merch, White took the opportunity to point out that he could have called out Trump for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with gold-plated home decor.

"Listen, I’m an artist and not a politician so I’m in no need to give my answer or opinion on anything if I’m not inspired or compelled, but how funny that it wasn’t me calling out trump’s blatant fascist manipulation of government, his gestapo ICE tactics, his racist remarks about Latinos, Native Americans, etc. his ridiculous 'wall' construction, his attacks on the disabled, his attempted coup and mob insurrection and destruction of the sacred halls of congress, his disparaging sexist and pedophilic remarks about women, his obvious attempts at distraction about being a close personal friend of Jeffrey Epstein and his inclusion in the Epstein files, his ignorance of the dying children in Sudan, Gaza, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, his lack of empathy for military veterans and those struggling with poverty," White wrote, going on to list a number of other actions before adding, "No, it wasn’t me calling out any of that, it was the f—king DECOR OF THE OVAL OFFICE remarks I made that got them to respond with insults. How petty and pathetic and thin skinned could this administration get? 'Masquerading as a real artist'? Thank you for giving me my tombstone engraving! Well here’s my opinion, trump is masquerading as a human being."

White's post continued at length, with the musician quoting Theodore Roosevelt in his caption: "To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

Jack White Has Spoken About Trump in the Past

This is far from the first time White has spoken out against Trump. As The Tennessean reported, after the first time his campaign used "Seven Nation Army" in 2016, White and his label, Third Man Records, came out with “Icky Trump" merch (a twist on the title of the White Stripes 2007 album and song "Icky Thump") including shirts printed with the lyrics to "Icky Thump" which read:

"White Americans? What? Nothing better to do? / Why don’t you kick yourself out? You’re an immigrant too. / Who’s using who? What should we do? / Well, you can’t be a pimp and a prostitute too."

Whether or not this is the last chapter in White's ongoing feud with the White House remains to be seen, but one thing is clear — neither side seems ready to back down anytime soon.
