Extreme heat cancels classes, leads to early release for these Denver Public Schools: List

DENVER (KDVR) — Denver's temperatures will vie for the record of 99 degrees on Thursday, prompting district officials to cancel classes and issue early releases for over a dozen schools.

This comes as Denver Public Schools works to add air conditioning to all of its buildings by 2028. Two schools — Doull Elementary and Ellis Elementary — had AC installed before class began this month, but there are still 27 schools that need AC installations.

Also closed on Thursday are all Little Links and Discovery Link programming that are scheduled at closed schools.

"We know that the decision to close schools can lead to unexpected challenges for families," Denver Public Schools said in its announcement. "Because of that, our schools will notify their families directly by 5 p.m. the evening before an expected heat-related closure or early dismissal."

Buses for schools that are releasing early will run normal routes at the listed dismissal times. Early release students at Johnson Elementary and Bryant Webster will receive lunch before their dismissal.

Poudre School District is also releasing most schools early on Thursday due to the high temperatures. All elementary schools except the mountain schools, all middle schools, Centennial High School, Polaris Expeditionary Learning School and Poudre Community Academy will be releasing students early on Thursday, Aug. 21.
