Health officials in DuPage County have confirmed the county’s first West Nile virus-related death of 2026.
The DuPage County Health Department said Tuesday an adult resident’s death was linked to the virus but didn’t provide additional details.
At least one West Nile virus death has been reported elsewhere in the Chicago area this year. The Chicago Department of Public Health said in early September one person died from the illness.
DuPage County has reported six human cases of the virus so far this year. A total of 14 human cases, including one related death, were reported in 2025.
According to the health department, humans get infected when they are bitten by mosquitoes that picked up the virus by feeding on infected birds. Most people have either little or no symptoms, though roughly one in five people who contract the virus will develop symptoms. Those include fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash.
Older residents and those with compromised immune systems can develop more severe illness, with symptoms typically starting between two-to-six days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, West Nile is the most common mosquito-borne illness in the United States.
Residents are encouraged to protect themselves by:
-Wearing protective clothing
-Using EPA-approved insect repellant
-Making sure doors and screens are intact to keep mosquitoes out of homes.
-Clearing areas of standing water
-Reporting stagnant water in public places to authorities
