Anyone who grew up in the '90s was glued to the couch when Home Improvementcame on. Watching leading man Tim Allen navigate life as a dad, successful career man, neighbor, and husband were some of our favorite entertainment memories back in the day. It's eight-season run came to an end in 1999, and ever since, fans have been begging for a reunion.
And it looks like the people will be getting what they want... sort of. Currently, Allen is starring in his new sitcom series Shifting Gears, which returns him to the role of fumbling dad, and he decided to have a few of his former castmates make an appearance. His former TV wife Patricia Richardson, and "Tim the Toolman's" colleagues Richard Karn, and Debbie Dunning were all tapped to join him in an episode on October 1 on ABC.
And of course, the news has longtime fans of the show freaking out.
"Is Debbie Dunning a Vampire?" inquired one curious fan.
"Is it me, or do they all look great," added another.
"Did Patricia Richardson age?! I keep seeing about the actress that played Heidi (sorry don't remember her name). She looks beautiful too! Just because Patricia has grey hair doesn't mean she looks like she aged and doesn't look beautiful! She could dye her hair but she didn't," stated one fan.
While several others also many comments about Karn and Allen's good looks, the other focus of the reactions was largely set on asking whether or not Home Improvement itself would ever make a return to TV.
Why Home Improvement likely isn't going to get a full reboot.
The quick glimpse on social media doesn't reveal anything about their roles, but showed them pretending to walk onto the Home Improvement set before Allen guides them over to Shifting Gears. Fans took this as a subtle nod to the fact that they won't be rebooting the beloved show.
The topic has come up several times in the passing years, with various cast members commentating on why it is likely impossible. Despite Allen claiming he was talking with Karn about a reboot as well as the actors who played the kids, Richardson claimed she was never approached. USA Today reported on Richardson's commentary on the situation in 2023 on Twitter (now X) and her remarks particular spurred controversy.
"(Tim) was kind of lying to people and telling them that I was on board, and I didn't know anything about it,” Richardson said. “So, I wrote a big thing on Twitter and just said, 'I'm not involved in any kind of series with Jill, and I've also never even been asked to do another 'Home Improvement' reunion thing.' But I would not want to.”
She went on to explain that changes in the main cast like kids Zachary Ty Bryan's legal troubles, Taran Noah Smith quitting acting , and Johnathan Taylor Thomas focusing on writing and directing, makes the reunion feel impossible. And of course, she also mentioned losing neighbor Wilson, played by the late Earl Hindman, would make returning to the show "weird."
It appears the fallout from that commentary had no impact on Richardson's involvement with Shifting Gears, and fans are looking forward to the mini-reunion set to come this fall.
