We frequently discuss how much professional athletes make, but we hardly discuss how it impacts their lives. Chicago Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagent reminded us today how much that cash impacts the players and their families, especially the first time they sign an extension.
When asked about his new contract extension—which was announced on Wednesday—Bagent got emotional talking about all of the family and friends he can help with the new contract he signed this week.
“A lot of people don’t know this, but my dad is my right-hand man,” Bagent said at the podium at Halas Hall on Wednesday. “He didn’t even have running water until he was in high school. There’s definitely a lot of things and people that I think I can certainly help with this gift I’ve been blessed with. Just little things like that—I don’t really know anybody back at home with any money. It feels good, it’s certainly a weight off my shoulders and my family’s shoulders; yeah, it definitely means a lot.”

— GNSportsTV (@GNSportsTV) August 20, 2025Tyson Bagent’s new contract means a lot to his family, and it also shows how much the Bears value him in Chicago
When Tyson Bagent replaced Caleb Williams on Sunday against Buffalo, the offense continued to hum the way it did on that opening drive. Bagent’s night consisted of 196 passing yards and a touchdown, while leading multiple touchdown drives and posting a passer rating of 103.6.
Unsurprisingly, social media was loaded with takes on the backup signal caller, most of which revolved around trading Bagent to a quarterback-needy team for some draft capital to use next spring. It’s not a new concept, and it does have some logic.
However, I think Bears general manager Ryan Poles and company ended that conversation by extending Bagent this week. Chicago sees Bagent as a quarterback who can effectively step into the starting role if Caleb Williams has to miss some time with an injury at some point this season.
Head coach Ben Johnson believes that Bagent can be a starting quarterback in the NFL at some point:
“I don’t think there’s any question about it,” Johnson said when asked if he thought Bagent could be a starter somewhere in this league. “I’ve really been blown away by his approach; from the spring, into the start of camp, to where we are now, he does a tremendous job of knowing what to do, how to do it, and getting it done.”
© Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY SportsJohnson also thinks that keeping Bagent and veteran Case Keenum at Halas Hall gives the Bears one of the best quarterback rooms in the league.
“I don’t think we can have enough talent in that room; I think we actually have one of the best rooms in the NFL, certainly that I’ve been around in my career from top to bottom. We’ve got three or four guys that can play in this league,” Johnson said of his quarterbacks on Wednesday.
I can’t say I disagree with Johnson. Regardless of what Bagent’s future holds, I’m happy for him and his family today.
