Letters are going out from the State Board of Elections to about 82,000 people who don’t have identification numbers associated with their voter registrations.
The letters are a step in the effort to collect driver’s license or partial Social Security numbers from registered voters whose electronic data files appear to be missing those identifiers that the elections board approved in June.
The mail will encourage recipients to provide one of those numbers online through the DMV, in person at their county elections office, or by mail, using a self-addressed stamped envelope, according to a Board of Elections news release.
A searchable list of people who don’t have one of those identifiers attached to their registration can be found through the Registration Repair Search Tool.
President Donald Trump’s US Department of Justice is suing the State Board over the missing information. State Elections Director Sam Hayes told the board at a recent meeting that the plan for collecting information may help settle the lawsuit.
The DOJ lawsuit mirrored the complaints from GOP Appeals Court Judge Jefferson Griffin. He challenged the votes of more than 60,000 people in his failed attempt to overturn the election of his Democratic opponent for a seat on the state Supreme Court based on what he said was missing registration information.
Griffin’s voter challenge and lawsuits, in turn, mirrored a state GOP and Republican National Committee lawsuit against the state elections board that sought to purge 225,000 voters before the 2024 election.
People who haven’t provided the identifiers by the next time they vote will be given provisional ballots when they go to the polls. The provisional ballot application asks for the numbers.
Provisional ballots will count once the numbers are validated, the news release said.
