Derek Jones, a distance swimmer out of Bellingham, Washington, is headed to California this fall to swim and study at Chapman University.
Jones attended Bellingham High School and competed for the Bellingham Bay Swim Team.
“I chose Chapman because of its amazing academics and up-and-coming swim program,” Jones said about his commitment. “I am super excited to be a Panther!”
Jones is a top distance swimmer in his state. He showcased this at the 2024 Washington Senior Champs last December, where he notched a 4th place finish in the 1000 free (9:37.60). He also finished top 8 in the 1650 (16:20.00) and 9th in the 500 free (4:37.99).
Since then, the soon-to-be Cougar made appearances at sever other high-level meets in the region, including the Speedo Sectionals in Boise and the Futures Championships in Sacramento.
Jones is on an improvement curve in his distance events. His 1000 and mile times from the 2024 Washington Senior Champs mark 15+ drops from the same meet the year before.

1650 free — 16:20.00 1000 free — 9:37.60 500 free — 4:37.99 200 free — 1:43.29He comes into Orange County with the potential to be one of Chapman’s top distance talents. His 1650 would’ve placed him 2nd among Cougars and 7th at the Division III Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) this season. His 500 free would also rank him 3rd on the team and top 8 in the conference.
Jones will find a compatible distance training partner in rising sophomore Ryan Musich, who produced new distance personal bests of 4:39.83/16:17.97 this championship season. He will join an eight-strong male class of 2029, which includes fellow Washingtonian Cooper Na.
