Cubs Prospects Report .. August 18, 2025: Iowa Escapes Early Deficit, Rojas Sharp Again In South Bend, More

The Iowa Cubs fell into a deep hole early, but came back in a big way for a fun, come-from-behind win. Knoxville and Myrtle Beach both had big days offensively en route to wins, while South Bend finally cooled off and dropped their finale, though they were treated to another very good pitching performance again from Yenrri Rojas. Let’s get to it.

Cubs Prospects Report | August 18, 2025

Triple-A Iowa Cubs

Iowa spotted the Red Sox a 4-0 lead early in this one before they even stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the first. Chris Kachmar struggled, allowing five hits, four runs, and a walk in that opening frame. After trading runs, the Cubs then trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the third. That’s when the bats broke out! Iowa put up three in the third, two in the fourth, and two more in the sixth to turn a four-run deficit into a three-run lead.

Caleb Knight and Hayden Cantrelle had the two big blasts of the day. Knight’s three-run shot in the third brought the Cubs within one, then Cantrelle’s two-run homer put Iowa up for good. The two runs in the sixth came on a James Triantos fielder’s choice, followed by a wild pitch.

    Notable Performances

    Caleb Knight | 2-3, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI Hayden Cantrelle | 2-3, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI Forrest Wall | 2-3, R, RBI, BB

    Double-A Knoxville Smokies

While Iowa spotted their opponent an early lead, Knoxville jumped out to a quick 7-0 advantage in their finale with the Trash Pandas. BJ Murray Jr, Reivaj Garcia, and Brett Bateman all had RBI singles. Pablo Aliendo got hit by a pitch, and Jordan Nwogu brought in a run on a fielder’s choice. After allowing a run in the second, the Smokies fired right back with three more in both the third and fourth, making it 13-1, and from there, Knoxville went on cruise control.

The Smokies used five pitchers on the day, including starter Grant Kipp, who allowed the one run over three innings of work. None of the Smokies pitchers allowed an earned run until Casey Optiz allowed three in the ninth on a pair of home runs.

    Notable Performances

    Brett Bateman | 2-3, R, 3 RBI, BB BJ Murray Jr | 2-4, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI Jordan Nwogu | 2-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 2B

The Cubs recorded just four hits on the afternoon, none of which turned into runs as they fell 1-0. On the positive side, they got yet another very good start from Yenrri Rojas, who’s been outstanding in his four outings since being called up to South Bend. Rojas went six innings, allowed one run, five hits, and struck out six. His ERA since the call-up stands at just 0.82 over 22.0 innings pitched.

Like Knoxville, Myrtle Beach got out to a fast start in its finale with Columbia. In the top of the first, Matt Halbach and Eli Lovich each had RBI singles, and Dilan Granadillo had a sacrifice fly to give the Pelicans a 4-0 lead after the opening frame. The score stayed that way until the fifth, when the Pelicans added on three more. Halbach made it 5-0 on a groundout, then Lovich and Angel Cepeda hit back-to-back triples, increasing the lead to 7-0.

Myrtle Beach added one more in the sixth on a Kane Kepley groundout, and the Pelicans went on to win this one 8-5.
