S. Jaishankar has expressed his desire for a multi-polar Asia to his counterpart from Beijing, Wang Yi
India is looking to build a “stable, cooperative, and forward-looking” relationship with China, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar told his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, on Monday.
Wang is on a three-day visit to New Delhi for the 24th round of border talks between the two countries. The Chinese foreign minister and Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval are the designated representatives for talks on settling the border dispute, which has strained relations between the Asian neighbors since they fought a brief war in 1962.
“Overall, it is our expectation that our discussions would contribute to building a stable, cooperative, and forward-looking relationship between India and China, one that serves both our interests and addresses our concerns,” Jaishankar told Wang.
The Indian foreign minister said the relations between the two countries must be guided by “the three mutuals – mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest.” He added, “Differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict.”
Jaishankar told Wang that India seeks a “fair, balanced, and multi-polar world order, including a multi-polar Asia.”

Wang will meet Modi on Tuesday after the border negotiations with Doval, the Indian Foreign Ministry said.
Ties between the Asian neighbors gained momentum after Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks last October on the sidelines of the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. The discussions come after a period of strained relations following a 2020 border clash in the Himalayas that resulted in casualties on both sides.
“Having seen a difficult period in our relationship… our two nations now seek to move ahead,” Jaishankar told Wang. “This requires a candid and constructive approach from both sides.”
