A CLEMSON college football player was arrested this weekend just days before the new season.
Head coach Dabo Swinney released a statement saying the school was “very disappointed.”
Tight end Ian Schieffelin, 22, was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
The Clemson City Police Department released a statement via social media Sunday.
It read, “Following a traffic violation on Tiger Boulevard, the Clemson Police Department made the arrest of Clemson University football player Ian Schieffelin for DUI at 1:47 AM last night.
“He was released on bond at 9:10 AM this morning. The investigation is still ongoing.”
The incident came less than two weeks before Clemson kicks off it’s college football season.
They face No. 9 ranked LSU in their Week 1 game on August 30.
Head coach Swinney announced that the tight end would not be available for that game.
He said, “We are aware of Ian Schieffelin’s arrest on suspicion of DUI.
“Clemson Athletics has a clear policy by which we will abide.
“Ian will miss some competition to start this season as a consequence.
“We’re obviously very disappointed by the situation.
“But we are very thankful no others were involved and no one was hurt.”
Schieffelin played college basketball for Clemson from 2021 to 2025.
He entered the transfer portal, hoping to receive a fifth year of eligibility and continue his basketball career.
Under NCAA rules, students can only compete in a particular sport for four seasons.
Coach Swinney called Schieffelin this spring with an offer to play for the football team in 2025.
And the 22-year-old told ESPN in May, “I’ve been just training for basketball, getting ready for the next level.
“Dabo just walked me through the opportunity he was willing to give me, and it all sounded great, something I wanted to jump on.
“It really just sparked my interest in wanting to try, and being able to put on a Clemson jersey again was very enticing to me.
“To be able to be coached by Dabo is just a huge opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”
