The Chicago Bears return to the Soldier Field turf, where they will resume their preseason slate of games against the Buffalo Bills. And when they do so, all eyes will be on the left tackle position.
Ideally, the Bears would have solved their left tackle problem by now. Going into Preseason Week 2 without an established starter who will be ready and able to protect the blindside of quarterback Caleb Williams is suboptimal. And while I appreciate a good, old-fashioned head-to-head training camp position battle, I’d rather have Chicago’s offense have the most important position along the offensive line locked in by now. Instead, we enter game day with incumbent starter Braxton Jones, rookie Ozzy Trapilo, and second-year undrafted lineman Theo Benedet jockeying for position.
Even though I don’t like to put too much stock into preseason games, it is starting to feel like an important one for Ozzy Trapilo. When asked about what the rookie from Boston College needs to work on, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s answer felt telling.
“It’s really play speed,” Johnson said, via the Tribune. “There are times where the feet have gotten a little bit slow at times, both in the run game and in pass pro. The mental (process) of just speeding up, ball, snap, let’s go ahead and get in a good physical position here to block the man in front of me, it’s been a little bit of up and down.”
I never necessarily cared which player won the battle royale to start at left tackle, as I was in a “let the best man win” mindset all summer. But at this point, all I want is for someone to step up and earn the gig. If someone from the Jones/Trapilo/Benedet triumvirate doesn’t make a move, then the Bears will have some big fish to fry between now and the start of the regular season.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t spill some virtual ink in this space writing about Mitchell Trubisky. Friday marked Trubisky’s return to Halas Hall for the first time since 2020 after leaving as a free agent. Trubisky is one of the most polarizing quarterbacks in franchise history, and understandably so, I might add.
The second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Trubisky didn’t live up to being the first QB taken in his draft class. And that former GM Ryan Pace passed on Patrick Mahomes still sticks in the craw of some Bears fans. But Trubisky also has the honor of being the last Bears QB to (1) take the team to the playoffs, (2) make a Pro Bowl, and (3) throw for 300+ yards in a playoff game. In fact, Trubisky is the only quarterback in franchise history to pull off that trick. What a sad history for a proud franchise when it comes to the game’s most important position.
Trubisky has settled into a QB2 role. I doubt he will get another chance to start. But there is a part of me that is happy to see Trubisky carve a niche for himself in this league. Sometimes, top prospects who flame out are never heard from again. So to see Trubisky hang around is neat — if only because he can be a useful player in an Immaculate Grid that asks for Bears and Bills (or Bears and Steelers … or Bills and Steelers).
