Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra opined that Mohammed Siraj has been sidelines from the ODI format despite having proved his credentials in the past. The Hyderabad pacer, who was once considered an all-format player, was last seen in action in the one-off Test against AFG and wasn’t picked in the squad for the T20Is vs IRE and ENG or the ODI series either. Chopra reckoned that while there was lack of clarity on Siraj at the moment, the pacer is expected to be a part of the Indian team in the 50-over format in the near future.
‘Siraj will be fit and ready’
In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra pointed out that Siraj was initially sidelined from the ODIs with the management citing that he was unable to bowl with the old ball. The former Indian cricketer remarked that the Hyderabad pacer was the first player to be left out when it came to picking the squad for the white-ball formats. However, Chopra claimed that Siraj will always be fit and ready and will give his 100% whenever he is called to represent the team in ODIs.
“We have sidelined him silently. We did that in ODIs first, saying he is unable to bowl with the old ball. It seems like he has been sidelined a little. There is a slight lack of clarity. He is the first man to be left out, but I feel you will see him as part of the Indian team going forward. The Indian team has confidence in him that if something goes wrong, Siraj will be fit and ready, and when he plays, he will give his 100 percent. I think Siraj will come back. His name will come in ODI cricket,” Chopra said.
Siraj has played 50 ODIs to date since making his debut in 2019 and has picked 76 wickets at an average of 25.32. He was last seen in action in the 50-over format in the series against New Zealand earlier this year. After playing 25 ODIs in 2023 (including in the WC), Siraj has played just 9 50-over format in the next three years (including 2026 so far). He has largely been restircted to Test cricket.
While the Indian selectors have often cited workload management among other reasons to keep Siraj out of the white-ball setup, Aakash Chopra firmly believes that the fast-bowler will be a part of India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“I feel he will come because he is the kind of player you won’t be able to keep away for long. There is so much continuous churning in fast bowling that you will find that who is not there today would have come tomorrow. Come the World Cup, he will be there,” Chopra added.
