The Buffalo Bills will take on the Chicago Bears on the road for the team’s second preseason matchup.
The Bills lost their first matchup to the Giants 34-25 while Chicago tied the Dolphins 24-24. Of course, the results of preseason games mean almost nothing, what happens within them matter a lot to some–mostly backups and those fighting for roster spots.
Here are the top four things Bills fans should look out for in Sunday night’s game.
QB2 COMPETITION. Josh Allen, the NFL’s reigning MVP, has no competition to lose his job anytime soon. But his understudy, his backup, has yet to be named. On one hand, you have Mitch Trubisky, who’s served as the team’s second-string QB in 2021 and 2024–playing in Pittsburgh for two years between the stints. Trubisky has 57 career starts to his name, but struggled the last time he got extended playing time–throwing eight touchdowns to 10 interceptions with the Steelers over those aforementioned seasons. On the other hand, there’s Mike White–a four-year NFL veteran who has just seven career starts. White spent the 2024 season on Buffalo’s practice squad as the team’s third-string signal caller. In the team’s first preseason game, both QBs threw 13 passes. Mitch completed nine of them, Mike-eight. Trubisky threw for 138 yards and one touchdown, White–112 yards and two scores. So the two have played close to one another this preseason–Sunday’s game could allow one of the veteran passers to take an edge in the competition. WIDE RECEIVERS CONTINUE TO BATTLE. The Bills embodied “everybody eats” last season–a motto to suggest the team doesn’t need one bona fide top wideout, but rather a collection of talent. It worked as the team scored 30 points a game–good enough for second in the NFL a season ago. Not much as changed this go-around. The Bills return Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman and have added veteran wideout Joshua Palmer to round out the team’s top three receivers. After that–it’s a collection of talent of varying abilities and experience that aren’t just fighting for playing time, but a roster spot. Elijah Moore and KJ Hamler unofficially make up Buffalo’s backup slot options, with Moore boasting the most impressive resume of the two with 2,162 career yards. On the boundaries, Tyrell Shavers and Kristian Wilkerson have both made real cases to crack the team’s opening day roster while Curtis Samuel, who signed a three-year deal with Buffalo last offseason, has struggled to stay on the field this preseason. CORNERBACK DEPTH. Buffalo drafted Max Hairston in the first round back in April, he and Tre’Davious White were in a battle to be the starting cornerback opposite Christian Benford this season. With Hairston now injured and labeled as “week-to-week”, White will more than likely begin the season as a starter. Outside of Benford, White, and Hairston, however, there’s quite a bit of depth that could see plenty of action this season if injuries pile up. Veteran Dane Jackson spent the first four years of his career in Western New York before playing the 2024 season with the Panthers. Jackson is back in Buffalo for year six and provides defensive coordinator Bobby Babich a familiar face if he needs to fill in. Ja’Marcus Ingram enters his fourth year in Buffalo and played in all 17 games a season ago, recording two interceptions. Dorian Strong was a sixth-round pick earlier this spring out of Virginia Tech, while Te’Cory Couch spent all of 2024 on the Bills’ practice squad. STAY HEALTHY! As important as live action is for the Bills–staying healthy ahead of the team’s season opener against the Ravens is far more vital to Buffalo’s success. Head Coach Sean McDermott did not announce if the starters will or will not play–but did say he would love to play Josh Allen if it was guaranteed that he wasn’t going to get hurt. The Bills have had a laundry list of injuries this preseason–safeties Cole Bishop and Taylor Rapp have both been limited for much of the summer, starting right tackle Spencer Brown missed most of the St. John Fisher portion of camp with a back injury, Hairston remains out, and wide receiver Khalil Shakir has been labeled as “week-to-week” with a high ankle sprain, among many other minor injuries. For how many injuries the team has, they’ve been fortunate that none seem to be long-term.The game kicks off Sunday night at 8 pm and will be broadcast on FOX.
