Chicago Cubs Lineup: Is Today the Day the Bats Break Out?

CUBS LINEUP — There was an outside shot that Paul Skenes could’ve started today, but (for once), the Cubs will miss him. The bats better take advantage of that good fortune, because while winning yesterday was nice, they still scored only three runs … it’s time to break out, guys. Come on.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Michael Busch, 1B Kyle Tucker, RF Seiya Suzuki, DH Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Carson Kelly, C Ian Happ, LF Nico Hoerner, 2B Dansby Swanson, SS Matt Shaw, 3B

The wind is blowing in at Wrigley Gield, but I feel like today is the day the Cubs bats finally break back out. We’ve seen some slight improvements from PCA and Kyle Tucker, in particular, and I am just ready for some good vibes coming out of the weekend and heading into the Brewers series (… even though that series has taken on an entirely different meaning at this point).

Carson Kelly is behind the plate, Tucker is batting second, and Matt Shaw rounds out the lineup.

Let’s have a good day, Cubs. Come on.

    Pittsburgh Pirates Lineup:

    TBA

    Pitching Matchup:

    Chicago Cubs: Javier Assad, RHP

This afternoon, Javier Assad will make his second big league start of the season (he spent most of the year on the IL or rehabbing). And although his first start back didn’t go exceptionally well in Toronto (4.0 IP, 4ER, 8H, 1BB, 2K with a lot of loud contact), I think that’s probably a little misleading in terms of what to expect today.

For one, that was just his first start back. So at the most fundamental level, he deserves some grace to shake off the cobwebs. More specifically, that was a start on the road against one of the best and hottest offenses in baseball, an offense that is especially good versus righties like Assad. The Pirates, by contrast, are one of the worst and coldest offenses in the league. And lastly, he looked good in terms of velocity and pitch movement. Baseball is always gonna baseball, but I’m willing to guess that Assad has some better results this afternoon at Wrigley Field.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Carmen Mlodzinski, RHP –> Andrew Heaney, LHP

Carmen Mlodzinski began the year in the Pirates rotation, but shifted into more of a multi-inning swing role as the season went on. The results out of the pen have been a whole lot better than they were when he was pitching as a starter, but he’s getting the “start” today nonetheless. That said, he’s acting as an opener with Andrew Heaney expected to take the bulk

Andrew Heaney, a lefty, got off to a pretty good start this season, culminating in a quality start against the Cubs on June 12, when he had a 3.33 ERA through 14 starts. But the wheels have since fallen off quite a bit (last nine starts): 40.2 IP, 37 ER (8.19 ERA) with 13 HRs allowed. Lefties are having a particularly good time vs Heaney this season, with a .403 wOBA and 10 HRs in just 31.1 IP.
