By James Sutherland on SwimSwam

Brought to you by Spectrum Aquatics, a SwimSwam partner, our Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming series celebrates swimmers of every age and experience level with age group profiles of some recent results.

Sheldon Lamb, 13, Ames Cyclone Aquatics Club (IA): Lamb was a force at the Iowa Long Course Championships in Waukee at the end of July, winning five events and finishing as the runner-up in another in the boys’ 13-14 age group as he set new best times in everything he swam. His headlining performance came on the lead-off leg of the Cyclones Swim Club’s 200 free relay, as Lamb clocked 24.53 in the 50 free to rank 1st this season among 13-year-old boys and 13th in the 13-14 age group. He also won the 50 free individually in 24.78. Lamb also moves to 2nd this season among 13-year-old boys in the 50 fly (26.49), 3rd in the 50 back (28.19), 4th in the 100 back (1:00.67), 7th in the 100 free (55.15), 8th in the 100 fly (59.980 and 9th in the 200 IM (2:14.17). In addition to the 50 free, he also cracked the top 20 this season in the 13-14 age group in the 50 fly, ranking 18th.

Penelope Chao, 12, North Carolina Aquatic Club (NC): Between the North Carolina Age Group Championships in July and the Southern Zone Age Group Championships in early August, Chao has been on a tear, now ranking in the top 10 in the girls’ 11-12 age group this season in eight events. At the first meet, Chao posted times to sit 2nd in the 200 back (2:25.75) and 400 IM (5:13.73), 4th in the 200 fly (2:28.80), 5th in the 200 IM (2:29.09), 7th in the 100 breast (1:17.35), 8th in the 100 back (1:08.54) and 200 breast (2:47.28), and 9th in the 400 free (4:39.98). She then improved her 200 IM time a few weeks later, clocking 2:29.06 to remain in 5th, and added a best time in the 200 free (2:13.40) to rank 18th in the 11-12 age group this season.

Jimmy Jacobs, 15, 757 Swim (VA): Jacobs took three and a half seconds off his 100 back time in one day at the VA LC Age Group Championships in late July, bringing his PB down from 1:02.08 to 58.52 to claim victory and rank 3rd this season in the boys’ 13-14 age group and 34th all-time. Jacobs, who has aged up in the few weeks since the competition, also set best times in the 50 free (25.45), 100 free (55.21), 50 back (28.05), 50 fly (26.71) and 100 fly (57.83) at the meet.

Bo Breckenridge, 13, Pleasant Prairie Patriots Swim Team (WI): Before aging up to 13 at the beginning of August, Breckenridge dropped a time of 2:17.85 in the 200 back at a Last Chance Time Trial in Wisconsin, lowering his personal best time by three seconds (2:20.93). That swim ranks Breckenridge 2nd in the boys’ 11-12 age group this season and 31st all-time. Prior to the time trial, he set bests in the 200 free (2:14.29), 400 free (4:38.94) and 100 back (1:06.42) at the Wisconsin 12&U State Championships, winning titles in the 400 free, 800 free, and all three backstrokes, and then he set three more PBs at the Wisconsin 13 & Over Championship a few days later (after his birthday), setting new bests in the 800 free (9:33.69), 1500 free (18:25.25) and 100 back (1:06.00).

Aya Gillis-Pade, 14, Santa Clara Swim Club (PC): Gillis-Pade had a very impressive showing that flew under the radar at U.S. Junior Nationals two weeks ago, earning second swims in the 100 and 200 back despite being one of the younger swimmers at the meet. The 14-year-old dropped more than a second in the prelims of the 200 back, going from 2:18.69 to 2:17.39, and then got all the way down to 2:15.63 in the ‘B’ final, placing 12th overall and ranking her 1st this season in the girls’ 13-14 age group and 67th all-time. In the 100 back, she chipped eight one-hundredths off her PB to clock 1:03.47, place 19th, and rank 5th this season among 13-14s and 76th all-time.

Daniel Bunge, 12, NOVA of Virginia Aquatics, Inc. (VA): Bunge won seven titles and set best times in everything he swam at the Virginia Swimming LC Age Group Championships in late July, with his headlining performances coming in the 200 free and 200 IM. In the 200 free, he fired off a time of 2:01.44 to rocket up to 6th all-time in the 11-12 age group and 2nd this season. The 12-year-old also dropped three seconds to clock 2:19.20 in the 200 IM, slotting him into 2nd this season and 27th all-time. Between the Virginia LC Age Group Championships in July and the Eastern Zone Age Group Championships last weekend, Bunge has set a number of other notable best times that rank highly in the 11-12 age group. He also moves to 12th all-time in the 400 free (4:18.14), 21st in the 100 free (56.28), 30th in the 50 free (25.82) and 100 fly (1:01.52), 55th in the 400 IM (5:01.83), 71st in the 50 fly (28.16) and 100th in the 50 back (30.23).
