Golf legend Gary Player refuses to hold back on ‘tragedy’ Jordan Spieth’s career – and claims he could be best in world

GOLF icon Gary Player says it is a “tragedy” that Jordan Spieth isn’t the best player in the world.

Spieth has three majors to his name, winning both the Masters and the US Open by the age of 21 in 2015.

But since then the 32-year-old has struggled and has won just one PGA Tour title.

Dallas-born Spieth is currently sat at No.51 in the world rankings.

Player is a Hall of Fame member and lifted nine majors during his glittering career.

And the South African legend did not hold back in expressing his disappointment that Spieth has not been able to remain at the top of the sport.

Player told The Golf Supply YouTube channel: “Jordan Spieth, I think, is the best golfer in the world.

“But in my opinion he was taught the wrong thing.

“He was taught the wrong thing and he just went downhill.

“If you had a man like Ben Hogan teaching Jordan Spieth, he would be the best in the world.

“He’s such a competitor, such a wonderful man.

“A wonderful guy for golf, the best short game, best course management, but he just can’t hit the ball.

    “That is a tragedy.“

He added that there is a “tremendous lack of knowledge” from those involved in the sport.

Player also seemingly criticised the way American golfers are coached.

The 89-year-old claimed once stars are taught the bowed wrist technique “you’re gone” and “your golf career is limited.”

Player also made a bold remark about legend Seve Ballesteros.

He said: “Do you know who knew the least about the golf swing? Ballesteros.

“I played with him at Troon as a young man and he wasn’t even a 10 handicap.

“He had no idea what he was doing. No idea. But he had the greatest feel of any man that ever lived.

“He was so good from 50 yards in. He was as good as anybody that ever lived.

“I don’t know who the best is, but he was as good as anybody.

“But hitting fairways? All over the place.

“If you don’t have the knowledge, you’re limited. You’re very limited.”
