These Bears Training Camp Highlights Are Fun (And a Source of Optimism)

It has been difficult to get a read on Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams this summer.

On the one hand, there have been far too many practices for my liking in which beat reporters share news that the defense had the upper hand at practice. But on the other hand, there have been enough reports about plays from practice that suggest that QB1 is making progress. We won’t know how much progress Caleb Williams has made until the pads (and the lights) go on in Week 1. In the meantime, I feel as if this collection of plays from practice this week suggest that Williams is building a nice rapport with his receivers. And that counts as a source of optimism in my book.

Play #1 — An easy toss to Olamide Zaccheaus

Sometimes, it is the little things that make me smile. And that happens to be the case with the video above. Caleb Williams connects with Olamide Zaccheaus on an easy toss, then watches the receiver do the rest of the work as he racks up the YAC. The new-look Bears offensive coaching staff likely wants Caleb to play less hero ball and instead opt to take throws that are given to him. Of course, that is easier said than done. However, it should be easier than last year if Johnson can scheme players open the way he did when he was the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator.

CHICAGO BEARS TRAINING CAMP NOTES — AUGUST 15, 2025

The free-agent addition of Olamide Zaccheaus seems to fly under the radar, especially after the Bears snagged Luther Burden III in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. But Zaccheaus does a lot of little things well, which make him a unique fit for this team. Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels posted a 114.0 passer rating (39/54, 72.2%, 430 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT) when targeting Zaccheaus last year. If Williams can find similar success, then this offense could be cooking this fall.

Play #2 — A connection to DJ Moore

It never felt that there was a consistent connection between Caleb Williams and DJ Moore, and it feels like it shows up in the stats. Williams completed 70 percent of his passes thrown to Moore. Plus, he threw six touchdowns (against just three interceptions) while posting a 94.5 passer rating when targeting DJ. Don’t get me wrong. Those are respectable numbers, but Bears fans expected more production from that tandem. It will be interesting to see how Moore and Williams look when they link up once the regular season begins.

BEARS STARTERS WILL PLAY ON SUNDAY VS. THE BILLS

The balancing act that will take place as Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson finds enough touches for DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, Colston Loveland, Cole Kmet, and others will be unlike anything we’ve seen. In the meantime, I do enjoy seeing Caleb and DJ get together in practice with plays like this one.

Bonus play — Bears offensive linemen have fun

Football is supposed to be fun. So I will never pass up an opportunity to share highlights of linemen catching balls from QB1. I will not get too deep in the weeds here, but I feel as if it speaks volumes about the athleticism of offensive linemen in this modern era when you see right tackle Darnell Wright making plays like the one you see in the video above. I never thought I’d see linemen move like that, but here we are witnessing the evolution of football players. It’s pretty net, eh?
