MICHIGAN has been handed a massive punishment in relation to the football program’s sign-stealing scandal.
On Friday, the NCAA‘s Committee on Infractions levied heavy penalties against Michigan football.
The school is set to pay massive fines for the scandal, but it avoided the heaviest of punishments.
Michigan will not receive a postseason ban due to the sign-stealing scandal, but the NCAA has dropped multiple punishments that will make it hard to get there.
First, the team has been placed on probation for four years.
Then come the financial penalties, which are significant.
Michigan is receiving a $50,000 fine, plus a fine equal to 10 percent of the budget for the football program.
They are also being fined the value equivalent to the anticipated loss of all postseason competition revenue sharing for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
The last of the financial penalties is a fine equal to 10 percent of the scholarships awarded in Michigan’s football program for the 2025-26 academic year.
It is estimated that these fines add up to around $20 million.
On top of the financial penalties, Michigan will have their football official visits reduced by 25 percent for the 2025-26 season.
It will also enter a 14-week prohibition on recruiting communications.
The last of the punishments included individual suspensions.
First, Connor Stalions — who was caught stealing signs for Michigan — has received an eight-year show-cause order.
This restricts him from all athletically related activities during the order.
A show-cause order is basically an employment ban in college football.
Next, Jim Harbaugh — Michigan’s head coach at the time of the scandal — received a 10-year show-cause order.
