Cubs Prospects Report .. August 15, 2025: Alcántara’s Big Day, Knoxville’s Bats Wake Up, More

No Owen Caissie? No problem for Iowa’s offense! While the Cubs dropped their matchup with the Red Sox, they had a big night at the plate in their first game following Cassie’s call-up to Chicago. Plus, Knoxville seemed to snap out of its collective slump, South Bend won again, and Myrtle Beach dropped its second in a row. Let’s get to it.

Cubs Prospects Report | August 15, 2025

Triple-A Iowa Cubs

Despite losing their best hitter in Owen Caissie to the big club, the Iowa Cubs’ offense had a big effort on Thursday. Unfortunately, pitching let them down in a big way. Will Sanders got shelled for eight runs over just 3.2 innings pitched and put Iowa in a hole early.

Kevin Alcántara was the player of the game for Iowa in this one. With Caissie gone, The Jaguar stepped up, going 2-3 with an RBI double, a home run, and two walks. After seven innings, the Cubs trailed 9-5 and were somewhat within striking distance, but Luke Little and Gavin Hollowell combined to give up four runs in the top of the eighth to put the game close to out of reach. Iowa fought back with a five-run effort in the ninth, but their comeback attempt fell short and they dropped this one 13-10.

    Notable Performances

    Kevin Alcántara | 2-3, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB Chase Strumpf | 2-4, R, 2 RBI, BB James Triantos | 2-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2B, BB, SB

FINAL: Red Sox 13, Cubs 10 | Box Score

    Double-A Knoxville Smokies

After back-to-back shutout losses, the Smokies’ bats woke up in an 8-6 win over the Trash Pandas. Walker Powell had a tough start on the mound for Knoxville, giving up five earned runs over three innings of work, but after he exited, the bullpen settled things down and allowed just one run the rest of the way.

Fortunately for Powell, the offense had his back! The Smokies started the game off with a five-run first inning, highlighted by a Pablo Aliendo grand slam after Reivaj Garcia drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 1-0. Then, in the third, Knoxville tacked on three more to extend their lead to 8-2. That was all for the scoring for Knoxville, and sure, maybe seeing them add a few more later on would have been nice, but after two straight shutout losses, we’ll take an eight-run outing any day.

    Notable Performances

    Pablo Aliendo | 2-3, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, BB Corey Joyce | 1-3, R, RBI, 2 BB Brett Bateman | 1-3, R, 2 BB

FINAL: Smokies 8, Trash Pandas 6 | Box Score

    High-A South Bend Cubs

South Bend won its sixth straight game and third straight over the Sky Carp on Thursday by a final score of 6-2. Kevin Valdez gave the Cubs a solid start, allowing just one run over 5.1 innings of work. After Yency Almonte allowed one more run in the sixth, the back end of the bullpen locked it down with three straight scoreless frames to close out the win.

All of the offense for South Bend came in the fifth and sixth innings. Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning, Brian Kalmer blasted a solo shot to even up the score at 1-1. Then in the sixth, the Cubs broke the game open with a five-run effort. First, Ariel Armas ripped a two-run triple to make it 3-1, then Rafael Morel doubled home two more, making it 5-1. Later, Kalmer contributed again with an RBI single, advancing the lead to 6-1.

    Notable Performances

    Brian Kalmer | 2-4, HR, 2 RBI Ariel Armas | 2-4, R, 2 RBI, 3B Rafael Morel | 1-4, R, 2 RBI, 2 B

FINAL: Cubs 6, Sky Carp 2 | Box Score

    Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Myrtle Beach fell behind 3-0 after three innings and just couldn’t crawl out of the hole. Nazier Mulé allowed four runs in five innings of work, and his counterpart, Kendry Chourio, tossed five innings of no-hit ball. Already trailing 7-0, Myrtle Beach finally got on the board in the top of the eighth. Christian Olivo blasted a two-run homer to make it a 7-2 ballgame. Unfortunately, there was no grand comeback effort after that, and 7-2 was how the game would end.

    Notable Performances

    Christian Olivo | 2-3, HR, 2 RBI, SB Matt Halbach | 1-3, 2B, BB Derik Alcantara | 0-3, R, BB

FINAL: Fireflies 7, Pelicans 2 | Box Score
