The loss was bad, and there wasn’t much good to say about it. Matthew Boyd was great. The bats did almost nothing.
One of those bats belonged to Owen Caissie, who, without a crazy robbery in his first at bat, would’ve had extra-bases, and maybe that part of the storyline is different. As it stood, he went 0-4 in his big league debut.

— Cubs Zone (@CubsZone) August 14, 2025But that doesn’t take away from how special it was, and I want to highlight how positive I think it was that the Cubs got Owen Caissie into the starting lineup for that game.
“It was surreal,” Caissie said, per Cubs.com. “Growing up watching the Blue Jays, I’m just super thankful the Cubs could make my debut happen in front of the Canadian people I cherish so much.”

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 14, 2025Just think about how uniquely special that must have been for Caissie, getting to make his big league debut, of all possible places, just 45 minutes from where he grew up. I think that the Cubs do consider things like that at the margins, and I actually do think it matters. Players care about how an organization treats them. They remember the highs and the lows. They talk. It all filters out, and when we see those surveys about which organizations players appreciate and which ones they think treat players (and their families) poorly, this is the kind of stuff that factors in.
The benefits of treating your players and their families well – going the extra mile, and making tiebreaker decisions like this one – might be hard to pin down precisely day-to-day, but over the course of a decade, I have to believe there are fruits. A guy chooses to sign with your organization instead of another. A guy signs an extension at this price instead of that price. A group of teammates support each other and perform a touch better because they’re getting tips on the daily. So on and so forth.
So, outside of Matthew Boyd, then, how about that for one good thing about yesterday’s game?
