I went bowling last night for the first time in over a year and a half, unless you count Special Olympics bowling this summer (I was helping The Littlest Girl, as opposed to actually spinning it, myself – it was fun!). I used to go semi-regularly, but then the back injury happened and I’d been a little worried that the lopsided, jerky nature of bowling would be a risk. But it’s been a long time since surgery, I feel more or less fine, so I decided to go with a friend. Mostly, it was good – I’m sore in some unusual places and I kinda sucked, but I think I passed the physical test. Now I just have to get better at the bowling part.
Speaking of needing to get better …

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 14, 2025 Like I said in the EBS, the 8th inning was a PERFECT summation of how things are going. Down by a run, the Cubs saw runners reach second and third with nobody out. Then Ian Happ struck out. Then Kyle Tucker struck out. Then Carson Kelly, after pulling a would-be-three-run-homer a little foul, struck out.The Cubs had runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 8th with nobody out, trailing by a run. They did not score. pic.twitter.com/g0Zpcygitf
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 14, 2025 Nasty pitchers, sure. Sometimes an inning like that happens, sure. But when it’s been weeks and weeks of this kind of thing and you lose the game because of it? Pretty hard not to linger on an inning like that. Can I be honest? As soon as Ian Happ struck out, I typed out this tweet, because I just knew it was going to happen (the only tweak before clicking send was about the foul ball):Tying run at third, lead run at second. Nobody out. Happ K. Tucker K.Kelly (near three-run homer and then) K.
— Bleacher Nation (@BleacherNation) August 14, 2025 I don’t think this is an outlandish or crazy point, though I do have a but coming:And the basbeall gods might be sending Craig Counsell a message: Their hottest hitter — Matt Shaw (1.100 OPS since the break) was left on-deck to end the game. The only hitter in the lineup who didn't get 4 PA's. t.co/9IRCOFCyXp
— Jesse Rogers (@JesseRogersESPN) August 14, 2025 Generally speaking, you want your best hitters to get the most plate appearances. And for nearly a month, Matt Shaw has been the Cubs’ best hitter … getting the fewest plate appearances. That said, there’s another consideration here: Shaw a rookie who is still establishing himself, and perhaps his production is benefiting from NOT having too much pressure higher in the order. Me? I’d probably consider making a switch sooner rather than later, but I could understand if Craig Counsell preferred to leave well enough alone with respect to Shaw’s success. As always, the real problem with the offense is not where Matt Shaw is hitting; it’s that the best bats are not hitting at all. © Jeff Curry-Imagn Images The Sun-Times reports that Brandon Birdsell’s elbow injury will have him seeing Dr. Keith Meister, whom the internet (and my memory) tells me is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in, among other things, Tommy John surgery. I hate how this is trending for the 2024 Cubs org pitcher of the year. Each of the South Bend Cubs and Myrtle Beach Pelicans are in first place in the second half, with the former pitching out of their minds and the latter hitting out of their minds. The latest on the national rights negotiations:MLB executives are in negotiations that could result in new broadcast packages with Netflix, ESPN, NBC and Apple, according to officials briefed on the discussions.www.nytimes.com/athletic/655…
— The Athletic (@theathletic.com) 2025-08-14T17:49:25.803Z Among the additional tidbits in there, Netflix might be trying to get the Home Run Derby, and ESPN might be trying to buy MLB.tv. I’d say that would really help with ESPN’s efforts to launch an over-the-top streaming app, which is coming next week. Yikes. And he was apparently sitting just 93/94 mph with the fastball:Roki Sasaki’s first rehab start since his injury in May:2 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 0 K pic.twitter.com/jIQGEF8700
— Talkin’ Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) August 15, 2025 I am starting to wonder whether Roki Sasaki’s decision to come over early to MLB was as much about getting out ahead of possible future arm issues as it was about a wink-wink understanding with the Dodgers. Because that latter part sure hasn’t worked out for him.
