The Cubs have a chance today to walk out of Toronto with a series win. That, of course, would be a tremendous outcome, and a tremendous buoy to the collective spirit …
That was certainly an eventful night. We’ll get to the Cade Horton of it in a separate post. And if you missed the big roster news, top Cubs prospect Owen Caissie is coming up for his big league debut (in his Canadian home!). That, unfortunately, was because of the catastrophic-looking Miguel Amaya injury at first base. All we can do is hope for the best on Amaya, who had just returned from two months on the IL with an oblique strain. You feel sick for the young man. The early update from the team was that X-Rays were negative and there is at least an ankle sprain there. I’ll reserve my full optimism until we know that there isn’t any damage in the knee that wouldn’t show up on an X-Ray – it’s also worth some caution about the timeline here because Amaya had previously suffered a serious ankle sprain and Lisfranc fracture in that left ankle/foot a few years ago. If he is able to come back and contribute this season, that would be tremendous, but we’ll just have to see how things shake out. Until then, Reese McGuire resumes his duties as catcher number two, and thank goodness (again) that the Cubs have him. As for the rest of the game, the Cubs’ bats showed up a bit more than they have been, even if the results weren’t over-the-top. The Cubs had a whopping NINE batted balls with an expected batting average of .360 or better that turned into outs, including FOUR at .770 or higher! Dansby Swanson and Kyle Tucker had particularly rough luck on some great swings. Good to see, and you hope the results come next time. The rough luck wasn’t enough to slow down Matt Shaw, though, who hit his EIGHTH home run since the All-Star break. It was his 10th on the season (he’s in the 10-10 club!), and brought his season slash line up to .228/.296/.401/96 wRC+. He’s been a league average hitter in the bigs since Japan, if you’d like to put it that way. Progress isn’t linear. © Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images Daniel Palencia was 0.1 mph on one of his fastballs from “hitting 103” (rounding up). So that’s fun. Even more fun?
