There’s nothing worse than making your third cup of coffee for the day, only to find out that you could possibly be ingesting a dangerous chemical or foreign object. Talk about a wake-up call. That kind of news could cure our caffeine dependency for good—or at least make us finally switch to matcha. Unfortunately, sometimes we find out after we’ve purchased or even eaten some items that they might be affected by some mishap in the distribution chain, and we’re left to pick up the pieces.
When it comes to coffee, especially, on average, Americans consume a whopping 164.2 billion cups a year, which translates to about three cups of coffee per day. Now, I’m not sure about you, but I normally make my first cup of coffee before I even wipe the crust out of my eyes and could probably do it blindfolded if you asked me to. It’s become more or less an automated process that I don’t even think twice about.

With that in mind, I’ve just accepted the fact that I’ve probably inadvertently consumed something that wasn’t exactly coffee at some point in time. As if we needed even more to worry about, though, Dollar General just issued a recall on Clover Valley Instant Coffee after a customer reported a possible issue with the product. The recall, which affects a whopping 48 states, excluding Hawaii and Alaska, was initiated after a shopper complained about finding glass inside the popular coffee.

Luckily, no injuries have been reported so far, but ingesting glass can be incredibly dangerous and even fatal, so it’s probably best to avoid this brand for the time being. The recall affects three lots of 8-ounce Clover Valley Instant Coffee, including Lot L-5163 (Best By 12/13/2026), Lot L-5164 (Best By 12/13/2026), and Lot L-5165 (Best By 12/14/2026). You can also identify the impacted products by the UPC: UPC 876941004069.
What To Do If You Purchased the Recalled Coffee
The lot numbers and best-by dates can normally be found printed around the neck of the jar, and we highly recommend double-checking to be on the safe side. While Dollar General is still investigating the source of the glass contamination, according to the FDA, customers are encouraged to dispose of the affected coffee and contact Dollar General by email at [email protected] or by phone (1-888-309-9030) to receive a full refund.
