Another Pitching Reinforcement is Coming Soon!

Earlier today, the Cubs got two key pieces back off the injured list, including tonight’s starting pitcher in Toronto, Javier Assad. But Assad is not the only arm on the way to help bolster the Cubs’ rotation. According to Taylor McGregor, the Cubs will get Jameson Taillon back soon, too.

Jameson Taillon is Coming Back

Specifically, McGregor reports that Taillon is scheduled to pitch for the I-Cubs tomorrow and will join the rotation the next time through the order.

Whose spot will he take may depend on what happens with the rest of the rotation/staff over the next five days, but Ben Brown is a good bet to be the odd man out.

If that’s how it goes, the Cubs would still have “regular” six starting pitchers, including Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, Cade Horton, Javier Assad, Jameson Taillon, and Colin Rea.

At that point, Rea could shift to a hybrid/swing role, but it’s also just as possible that the Cubs try to mix in all six starters in an effort to limit the innings of Boyd and Horton, in particular, who could use a little throttling.

There’s also a double-header coming up in less than a week (Monday vs Brewers), so Brown might stick around Chicago anyway, for when the Cubs need and are granted an extra arm.

With that said, I think things are lining up for Taillon to take one of the double-header starters on Monday.

This is purely speculative, but the rotation could shake out something like this:

Blue Jays 1 (tonight): Javier Assad Blue Jays 2: Cade Horton Blue Jays 3: Matthew Boyd Pirates 1: Colin Rea Pirates 2: Shota Imanaga Pirates 3: Javier Assad Brewers 1 (Monday): Jameson Taillon Brewers 2 (Monday): Cade Horton Brewers 3: Matthew Boyd Brewers 4: Colin Rea Brewers 5: Shota Imanaga

I hope Taillon looks sharp tomorrow, because anything less than domination next week against Milwaukee (which I’d define as winning four of five) isn’t going to cut it. Frankly, that conversation is probably already long gone, but I’ll wait for that series to eulogize the division race.
