Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer is in the news for an unfortunate reason this week.
Late Monday evening, screenshots from a Venmo account that appears to belong to Mateer surfaced on social media. The images show Mateer made 2 payments to someone back in November of 2022 with “sports gambling” in the memo line.
Here’s a look at the images:
IF* these John Mateer Venmo transactions are true 2 things can be said1. Why would you put “sports gambling” when you are a RS FR and it’s illegal by the NCAA 2. Who the heck looks at athletes Venmo transactions from 3 seasons ago??? pic.twitter.com/eUwarmhl65
— Garrett Armbrust (@4thandsaturday) August 12, 2025Shortly after the images surfaced, the account’s transaction history was deleted.
While Mateer has yet to confirm the account belongs to him, Sooner Scoop’s Geoerge Stoia reported on Tuesday morning that Oklahoma is aware of the matter. Stoia’s report says Mateer has assured Oklahoma he has “never gambled.”
Betting on college football games is, of course, against NCAA rules for student-athletes. If Mateer was confirmed to have bet on other college football games while at Washington State, he could face a suspension or other punishments. However, at this time it’s unclear if the NCAA will launch an official investigation into this matter.
If Mateer is sidelined for any length of time this season, it would put Oklahoma’s season in jeopardy. He arrived in Norman as perhaps the best quarterback transfer of this past offseason and is expected to be one of the SEC’s top passers in 2025.
Here’s some of the best social media reaction to this saga:
Oklahoma fans are eagerly awaiting an answer to the ultimate question.Did John Mateer really bet on Lincoln Riley?
— Connor O'Gara (@cjogara) August 12, 2025If you think John Mateer paid out gambling tabs under the title "sports gambling" on Venmo… You're as dumb as John Mateer would be if he paid out gambling tabs with the title "sports gambling" on Venmo.
— Brooks Austin (@BrooksAustinBA) August 12, 2025My favorite thing about all of this is the sheer desperation from Texas fans and “media”. They’re practically on their hands and knees begging the NCAA to kick John Mateer out of football.Fear has a very distinct stench and boy do they reek.
