A driver was hospitalized and another is behind bars after authorities said they were racing on Highway 99 in Modesto when one driver crashed.
The California Highway Patrol said a Corvette driver and a Mustang driver were racing each other on northbound Highway 99 north of Standiford Avenue Sunday afternoon.
The driver of the Corvette, a 26-year-old from Citrus Heights who was not wearing a seat belt, lost control when he approached slower vehicles and veered into the dirt center median. The vehicle then veered across all northbound lanes onto the right shoulder before it overturned several times and came to a rest on its roof on Sisk Road, the CHP said.
Officers believe the two vehicles were travelling at speeds over 100 mph.
The driver was thrown out of the vehicle and sustained major injuries, the CHP said. A 28-year-old passenger in the Corvette suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the Mustang stopped briefly before continuing north on Highway 99, the CHP said.
The 22-year-old suspect was later arrested at a home in Manteca, officers said. He is suspected of reckless driving causing bodily injury, speed contest causing injury, reckless driving, engaging in a speed contest and driving unlicensed, the CHP said.
"This is a stark reminder street racing is extremely dangerous," the CHP said in a news release. "It's not worth your life."
