Finally, we’re done talkin’ about practice.
The Chicago Bears play a preseason game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. It marks the beginning of the Ben Johnson era, even if most of the regulars who are expected to suit up when games matter in the standings won’t be playing. But more importantly, it means that we are done talking about practice. Sure, there are things that will happen at practices in the days and weeks to come. But after today, we will also have stuff from a game that is worth dissecting.
As far as I am concerned, having a game to discuss is a wonderful development.
While the Bears had a physical practice that was all the rage earlier in the week, there is a part of me that wonders if that event was overblown. And if it wasn’t, was it indicative of how “soft” other practices led by other coaches were? If that happens to be the case, and the Bears weren’t being led in practice the right way, then what does that mean about those of us who watched, reported, podcasted, and blogged about those practices? Should we be using this new example as a new standard? Should we use this new standard to reflect on how we didn’t mention anything about how practices looked sub-standard before?
Practices and preseason games are supposed to be teachable moments for players and coaches. And as I’ve always seen it, they are teachable moments for us, too. So please pardon us as we try to find our bearings and get things rolling in the right direction before business kicks up on Sept. 8 when the Bears and Minnesota Vikings kick off their regular-season slate of games on Monday Night Football.
