Greeley residents can now voice their opinion on the future of the name of the Union Colony Civic Center.
In April, the Greeley City Council approved a request from Union Colony Civic Center Advisory Board to begin exploring alternative names to better reflect the UCCC’s current identity as a space that is home to performing arts, visual arts and cultural events. The UCCC was originally constructed and named nearly 40 years ago.
“As you complete the survey, think of this building. It houses two theaters, a museum and a recreation center,” UCCC Board Chairman Mark Pugatch said. “It is the home where your children dance and your grandchildren act, and older people can even act through the Stampede (Troupe).”
The UCCC puts on hundreds of shows each year with a total attendance of about 15,000 people in 2024. In addition to two performing arts theaters, the UCCC is connected to the Greeley Recreation Center and hosts the Tointon Art Gallery, which features 10 exhibits by local, regional and nationally acclaimed artists each year.
Residents who choose to participate in the survey will be asked their opinion on whether the name should change and what style of name would be preferable. These options range from traditional to creative but provide no specific naming options to select, only examples such as “Greeley Downtown” or “The Gathering Space.”
The survey does not give residents a selection of names to choose from, instead focusing on whether a name change is needed and if the surveytaker is a patron of the UCCC. However, there is a box at the bottom where residents can suggest names for consideration.
“The Union Colony Civic Center has a decades-long legacy of bringing top-level entertainment to Greeley,” Cultural Affairs Division Manager Megan Weiler said in a city news release. “We’re looking ahead to the future and want to consider how renaming the UCCC could impact its future growth.”
Residents who wish to take the survey can go to speakupgreeley.com and find “Union Colony Civic Center Renaming Survey,” under “Current Projects.”
The UCCC board hopes to have the survey results in hand by November so that it can present them to the city council before its composition changes after this year’s elections.
