Suwayda: al-Hanawi Reverses His Position on Damascus

On Saturday, August 9, Sheikh al-Aql of the Druze spiritual leadership in Syria, Hammoud al-Hanawi, declared that there is “no covenant or pact” between Suwayda and the government in Damascus, marking a clear shift in his position toward the Syrian government.

In a statement delivered in a recorded video, al-Hanawi said, “We have been afflicted with an authority that has no honor; it sold the homeland and betrayed its people before it betrayed its borders, and it has been a drawn sword over the necks of the innocent, driven by extremist ideas that permit bloodshed.”

Al-Hanawi called on states and international organizations to assume their responsibilities and exert immediate pressure to lift the siege on Suwayda and open humanitarian corridors without conditions, also urging the international community to investigate and hold accountable all those involved in the crimes committed in Suwayda.

He described the events in Suwayda as “an existential and fateful issue for all the people of Suwayda,” adding, “The battle today is no longer an item on a political agenda or a bargaining chip—it has become an issue of existence and destiny for all the people of Jabal al-Arab.”

Al-Hanawi warned against “sedition and the media war,” as he put it, and the dangers of rumors, stressing that no negotiations or agreements had taken place with the Syrian government at present.

He also rejected what he called “attacks on the Druze community’s religious symbols and sanctities,” expressing astonishment at “Arab silence, media blackout, and concealment of the truth.”

There are three main Druze sheikhs in Suwayda: Hikmat al-Hijri, Yusuf Jarbou, and Hammoud al-Hanawi.

Among them, al-Hijri has taken the clearest stance against the Syrian government during the recent events in Suwayda, while al-Hanawi had remained silent until now.

During the events in Jaramana and Sahnaya, and unlike al-Hijri’s sharp position toward Damascus, Sheikhs Jarbou and al-Hanawi quickly went to Damascus and, alongside Sheikh Leth al-Balous, commander of the “Sheikh al-Karama” forces, played a role in calming tensions and reaching an agreement, mediated in coordination with the leadership of the Daraya area in rural Damascus (adjacent to Sahnaya).

At that time, Sheikh Hammoud al-Hanawi rejected any external interference in Syrian affairs, affirming that the Druze are an inseparable part of the Syrian national fabric and have never been a tool in the hands of any foreign party.

Speaking in a televised interview with the state-run al-Ikhbariyah channel, he said, “Belonging to the homeland is an honor and dignity that cannot be compromised,” calling for strengthening unity among all Syrians regardless of sectarian or ethnic affiliations.

He also expressed concern over recent events in Syria, especially in the coastal region, considering them harmful to all and detrimental to trust among Syrians.

At the time, al-Hanawi voiced his support for any agreement that would contribute to unifying the Syrian ranks.

The province of Suwayda witnessed bloody events in mid-July, resulting in the deaths of at least 1,013 people, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights.

Among the documented victims were 26 children, 47 women, six medical personnel (including three women), and three media workers.

The violence also wounded at least 986 people of varying severity from all sides.

These clashes involved local factions in Suwayda fighting against Bedouin groups, tribal fighters, and government forces.
