His experience with intercontinental ballistic missiles years ago helped create the foundation for the Greeley Museum’s current “13-Minute Warning: Weld County in the Atomic Age” exhibit.

The Atlas D missiles, the U.S. Air Force’s first operational intercontinental ballistic missiles, were 75 feet tall with a range of 5,500 miles, carrying warheads of 1.44 megatons. The missiles were operational from October 1959 to October 1964. There were a total of 30 Atlas D missiles placed in the field at Air Force Bases in California, Nebraska and Wyoming, where Widlar was stationed.

The Atlas D was the predecessor to the Atlas E missiles, of which there were 28 placed in the field. Weld County was home to four Atlas E sites, including Missile Site Park in west Greeley.
