With there being little/no hockey happening in August, and the Blackhawks celebrating their centennial season in the coming year, we’re going to spend some time this month looking back at the history of the franchise. Today we’ll continue with a look at a unique NHL record that four Blackhawks players share.
In the history of the NHL, the record for goals scored by a player in a single period is four. It’s happened 18 times in the history of the league — and four of those have come from a member of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Bentley scored 26 goals in 47 games during the 1942-43 season and was the first Blackhawks player to win the Lady Byng that year.
Smith scored 23 goals in 50 games during the 1944-45 season. He became the second Blackhawks player to win the Lady Byng the previous season (1943-44), giving the Blackhawks back-to-back winners of that award.
Mulvey scored 30 goals in 73 games for the Blackhawks during the 1981-82 season, one of two seasons in which he reached the 30-goal mark in his career (39 in 1979-80). He finished that Feb. 3 game with five goals and two assists in a 9-5 win over the Blues.
Secord scored 29 goals in 77 games for the Blackhawks during the 1986-87 season. He scored four consecutive goals to start the second period in that Jan. 7 game, with Mark LaVarre picking up the primary assist on the final three.
