Talent manager Brandon Blackstock, who was married to Kelly Clarkson for seven years and served as stepson to country music icon Reba McEntire, has passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer.
The 48-year-old died peacefully surrounded by family after fighting the disease for more than three years, according to a family representative.
"It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away," a rep for the family tells People in a statement. "Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time."
Just days before the announcement, Clarkson had revealed her ex-husband's illness when she made the difficult decision to postpone her Las Vegas residency to focus on their two children, River, 11 and Remington, 9.
"While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children's father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them," she wrote in a statement on Wednesday, August 6, apologizing to fans.
The former couple's relationship had been complicated since their 2020 divorce, with Clarkson ultimately receiving primary physical custody of their children. Their financial settlement, finalized in July 2021, required Clarkson to pay Blackstock $1.3 million upfront, plus $45,601 monthly in child support and $115,000 in spousal support.
Even after their split, both parents worked to maintain a co-parenting arrangement, though Clarkson has spoken openly about the challenges of shared custody. In March 2025, she offered a glimpse into their dynamic during an appearance on the “Not Gonna Lie” podcast.
"There's a lot that I keep in because ... co-parenting is fun," she said with honesty. She also opened up in 2021 while speaking with Khloe Kardashian on her daytime talk show.
"It's tough. … I know with me and Brandon, it's just a difficult thing because we're in different places, and it's like, we both agree on the main things, but it's a hard thing when you're not together all the time, for me personally."
