Montez Sweat is all-in on the new regime.
Listening to the 28-year-old edge defender provide a peek behind the curtain when talking about practicing under Chicago Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson and Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen makes me think that the 2023 Pro Bowler is all about the uptick in physical action during training camp practices. During an interview on NFL Network with Stacey Dales and Brian Baldinger, Sweat discusses what it has been like at Halas Hall:
“Dennis Allen, he really demands a nasty, tough physical front, so we’re just getting after it. Along with Ben, coming from where he’s coming from, we see they were pretty physical where he was at, so we’re trying to match that energy. I’m going to be honest. I think this is Year 7 that I’m going into, I’ve had more live periods this camp than I’ve had my whole career. I like it. If you like football, you’re gonna understand it. It makes you more chippy. It’s the preseason before the preseason, so we’re just getting after it. I like the physical toughness aspect to it.”

Montez Sweat is embracing the tough coaching style that Ben Johnson has installed as the Bears’ head coach. And I am not shocked at all. Not one bit. Not only do defensive players tend to gravitate toward physical practices traditionally, but after being in messy situations with the Washington Commanders and last year’s Bears, you don’t need much imagination to envision a player wanting a more structured and demanding environment. Hopefully, this will bring the best out of Sweat in 2025.
Things are lining up for Montez Sweat in Year 3 with the Bears
Montez Sweat’s first full season with the Chicago Bears was a relative disappointment. The edge defender finished the year with 5.5 sacks, 12 quarterback hits, and nine tackles-for-loss in 16 games. Those are modest numbers, but they also represented a fall-off from what Sweat put up in a half season with the team in 2023. And it left fans wondering which version of Sweat the Bears will get as he gears up for his third year (second full season) with the team.
Perhaps Sweat’s six sacks and 14 quarterback hits in nine games after being acquired ahead of the 2023 NFL Trade Deadline created expectations he couldn’t meet in his first full year with the team. Or a change at head coach, switching things up on the defense, and adding some additional beef on the defensive side of the trenches could help Montez get back to his 2023 self. Judging by Sweat’s comments above, it seems as if he is fully embracing the changes that have occurred at Halas Hall. It can only be a good thing when your highest-paid defensive player is all-in on the physical practices that first-year Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson is putting his team through.
Montez Sweat said he studied defenses run by new Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen before the start of training camp. I can’t wait to see how he shows off what he learned in those study sessions when Chicago kicks off its regular-season slate of games in 32 days with a Monday Night Football matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.
